Deadliest day for the U.S.: Taliban kill 31 Americans in helicopter crash

In what is perhaps a fluky tit for tat, insurgents have shot down a helicopter carrying several members of the Navy SEAL unit that killed Osama bin Laden (though none of the 22 killed were a part of that mission).

This marks the single bloodiest day for America in its 10-year mission in Afghanistan.

What do you think this will mean?

Do you think this will put more pressure to end the mission?
Do you think it will suggest that more should be done in Afghanistan?
Will it merely mean changing the details of the mission?

    Will anything different happen?

Will this be used as a catalyst for beginning new discussions of the war in Afghanistan?

Or is this just another list of lost souls in a war where few know what the outcome will be?

It is indeed a horrible loss. I'm sure there is some big moral here.

I think their deaths will be used to justify more activity in the area.

I am hoping you are wrong and they stop the nonsense, but you're probably right.

I hope their deaths are not so under-valued. The big moral I propose is to leave Afghanistan to its own devices, such as they are.

Sadly, I think you may be right. Personally, I'd like to see this be a wake-up call to those that make the decisions that we need to get our shit out of there, and that not even our Special Forces guys are immune to a lucky shot.

Everybody dies when you crash 'em in a Shithook. I wouldn't call the response "revenge," but I'm sure at least a few dudes will get their sternums and skulls opened up over this "Dead bodies are news, right?" incident from the Global War on Where? I'm all for that. We should be nothing if not more aggressive. Fuck Karzai, that two-faced bastard. Men with green eyes should be ruining doors all over the country every night until the day we leave.

I did a long weekend in Afghanistan once. Did a lot of traveling around. It's not the kind of country that you can own. It's the kind of country where you play Capture the Flag and rack up the body count on both sides until the team of people that can leave eventually decide they should go back to their NFL and Bud Light. That team would be us, of course. "Special Forces guys" or not, you can't expect the Afghan people to change through brute force. We've spent a load of time and money "training" the ANA / ANP and only a few tiny gold nuggets have come from that vast turd bucket.

We should get them the way we "got" most of the other countries we've conquered: Use Civil Affairs to set up a McDonald's.

We have nothing to gain (from the population) in Afghanistan. The Great Colonizers would like those delicious natural resources hidin' in dem hills, but it would be far more economic to nuke the entire country than it would be to fight this bitter, bitter "war." Didn't anybody see Rambo 3? Jeez.

/big dummy that doesn't know nuthin'

You are nothing if not more aggressive. Playing the devil's advocate doesn't always pay off. Destroying history to make up your own is time-honored.

maybe this is a little farfetch'd but what are the odds that the news story was just a random chinook that crashed and that the reported bodies were those of these SEALs? sure its a weak attempt, but maybe it would convince some of the taliban that the SEALs (or at least some of the one in the same unit that killed OBL) are dead and they dont need to spend resources looking for them since they died in a mitosis-helicopter crash

sounds like they got pat tillman'd to me. remember the hero of the war on terror? quit his football career to fight for his country and was labeled a hero by the news media. then we find out he was killed in action, then after more digging we find out it was friendly fire, then his family came to realization that he was murdered because he was going to go vocal about what a shame the war was.

they lie about tillman, they lie about wmds, and tom ridge admitted to raising the terror alert level to gain political ground. how convenient all the people from the phony bin laden raid died. this is just another story that's too hard to believe.

obl, no dna testing, no nothing, just some burial at sea. wtf..

i have no reason to believe this or any other news about the 'war on terror'. the whole war is filled with lies and deceit.

    this is truly a tragedy

i wouldn't say that the whole thing stinks and i'm pretty sure that there was DNA testing that occurred after OBL was killed (something about them collecting samples from the body and sent to a different nation to confirm to the world that we got him.

  11. It could very well be possible that a lucky strike took down the chopper and everyone on it. It more likely that the missions in Afgan will continue. The biggest thing is the government does not use this as another "remember the Alamo" type move to add more troops and fight people who just want us OUT of their country. Unless we plan on doing a complete take over, we are just wasting time and tax dollars. The billion plus a week this war is costing could cover EVERY social program and entitlement alone, and then some.

If I read it correctly, it said that while SEALs where from the same unit as those that kill OBL, none of the actual SEALs that were involved in the action of killing OBL, were on the helicopter.

This just sounds like another helicopter shot down in a war zone. It's only noteworthy because there was a larger number of soldiers on board. Reading more into this than necessary is a rube's game.

I can't think of answers to your questions. I'd like to, but I'm not good at it. But I will say that whilst I despise the politicking, I grieve for the loss of those souls.

the original article i read when the story broke was that they were members from the actual raid. now the story is from the same squad.

who knows, the terror war is full of lies and deceit.

What do you think this will mean? I don't think it will mean much in the grand scheme of things. It will be just another bloody day in a war zone.

Do you think this will put more pressure to end the mission? No more than there is already pressure to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Will it merely mean changing the details of the mission? I think it won't have any effect in the short term. The US is trying to get out and will eventually get out. They can't extract any fast than they are already doing so.

Will this be used as a catalyst for beginning new discussions of the war in Afghanistan? It would be nice if it was. The thing is, Afghanistan was the right action to take at the time of the Invasion. The Taliban were odious and dangerous. They were harbouring Osama and were thumbing their nose at the World. The initial invasion was largely done by Northern Alliance with US air support. It should have stayed that way.

I've heard traffic that this was Blue team of Devgru, Gold team were the guys who got OBL. Some Rangers were taking heavy fire and Blue team was called in as a QRF. They were trying to get guys on the ground as quickly as possible and got caught, no conspiracy theories here.

  18. beast mode, thats in contrast to what the taliban is reporting, they supposedly informed the allies that there was a high level taliban meeting in the area and this was the expected route the choppers would take.

who knows, there's so much bullshit in this fog, its always hard to tell who's telling the truth. i personally think they're both full of shit.

You think we all are. How's the kid? Are you training babylish to disrespect stupidity?

  20. who's 'we'? i dont think people here are full of shit. Its the opposite really. I actually enjoy reading posts i dont agree with more than the ones i do. That's what makes TFP so unique.

im trying to teach the babylish respect of authority first before we get to the stupidity bit. he'll get plenty of the the stupidity bits from me later :p
