And every time it comes back to what are Biden, and the Democrats, going to do.

How much political capital can Biden afford to spend?
Will he have the new Attorney General and revamped (I hope) Dept of Justice investigate and pursue charges?
    How will the Senate settle?
How severe would voter backlash be?
Is throwing more mud on a pig worth it?

I have no doubt Conman and his people played fast & loose with the rules, and probably didn't completely cover their tracks. Once Conman is out and pardons aren't available, the AG could get people to talk and testify.

Will any of this happen? If yes, to what degree?

I've read several reports where Counselori Guilliani denies discussing an advance pardon with Trump last week (first reported by The NY Times, IIRC).

I need to research if the Pres can give a blanket pardon for charges that have not yet been filed. That doesn't sound right. An outgoing administration should not be able to kill any chances of being convicted.

    Ford did it for Nixon.
Which isn't the best precedent but is proof it can be done.

Yes. Nixon was not facing any charges. Under the rules the pardon was not specifically allowed or disallowed. The pardon was never legally challenged.

There is a very good Wikipedia article that goes into detail about the ambiguities in Presidential pardons. No link, but the article is:
Federal pardons in the United States.

    Worth a new thread?

I'd be interested to see what he could actually get away with.
He has floated the idea of pardoning himself, his kids, Rudy, etc.

Even some conservatives have asked are “pre-pardons” allowable
And questioning aren’t they an admission of guilt?

Try and fail to get away with works better for me.

All of this could lead back to the SCOTUS. Obama's blocked appointment (and failure to fight for it), and Trump's successful appointment could be huge.

This post contain no worthy comments regarding the Trump administration.

It does contain some negative images regarding Trump.

Are they are (in)appropriate? You be the judge.

Any further Trump images, if any, will be related to current affairs.

He's still an idiot. A dangerous idiot until 20 Jan 21, and possibly afterwards.

This is a very good break down of how The Impeached 45's pardon powers break down from a lawyers point of view.
    It's pretty interesting.

The short answer is yes, but it would (eventually) end up a SCOTUS case if Trump were charged.

This bullshit should've been challenged after Ford & Nixon.
Changes should have been made to the US Constitution.
Leaving that kind of power open to interpretation is dangerous.

Our founding fathers probably never would have expected someone like Trump to get elected. Actually back then, before instant news broadcasting, someone like Trump might have had an easier time getting elected.

    Actually they did
But there were many monarchists among them
So they were fighting that mindset
And many wanted Washington to continue kind of like a monarch
But GW decided to stop after 2 term
That became precedent (no pun intended) til FDR
Then they had gotten so used to 2 terms, locked it down

There’s always been that sector of the population that likes only 1 authority.
Something in them wants someone to rule, no matter the corruption.
Democracy is complicated, some run from this.

We still need to codify and restrict the president more.
    Congress is the law maker.
Conflict of interest should be emphasized
    Citizen rights should be emphasized

I would hope that there is an Executive Branch Reform Act passed in 2021 that writes down a lot of the things that should be illegal, but no one ever thought any President would ever try to get away with it.

Congress may do it, because the want the balance of power back in their hands.
Even though the GOP was complicit this time, they’ll probably cooperate now that Biden is in
Or for any other opposition prez in the future
Congress tends to protect and promote itself

Please let Trump be convicted of a very serious crime or several very serious crimes.

Let him go broke (lose all of his real estate holdings, drain his liquid assets, etc), and serve the rest of his natural life in prison. A prison where he'll be Inmate number xxxxxxxx, not Mr. President or The Donald.

    I can dream.
