I took these pictures on May 31 2011 - this is an old cemetery not too far from where I live
Not that anyone likely cares but the GPS coordinates for this spot are 46°46'42.75"N 117° 7'1.53"W - middle of nowhere surrounded by farmland. The view on google earth does not even begin to show how this looks.
I am working with the RAW files and converting them straight to JPG and also posting them on minus.com (what you see here) and on my normal gallery at the same time, so I will be adding these in batches.
Enough talk for now, here is my first two -
Pic 1 - The View from the Road
    [IMG]
Pic 2 - Farming type of things you see out here (don't know or care what the exact proper name for this is)

Pic 3 - One of the many quiet unpaved roads around these parts. This is right around the corner
    [IMG]
Pic 4 - The front gates. These are easy to miss as you drive by.

  2. I really like rolling terrain. Adds character to the landscape.

How old is old? It looks to be a rather small, simple maybe family cemetary?

This area is full of rolling hills. Makes for some beautiful landscapes as the weather and growing season changes.
More shots to answer to that question. I have several more to post after pruning down my intentional overkilll approach I took that day for whenever I finally got around to posting them.
2 quick notes: I am editing at least a few of these RAW files slightly in Photoshop to bring out more details as I see fit before opening them and proceeding. I am also increasing the final size of some of these files to 200 KB or more as they look better at that range.
Pic 5 - Closer view of the front gate
    [IMG]
Pic 6 - Just past the gate. The grass is half way to my knee in this area.
Pic 7 - Looking back at the gate
    [IMG]
Pic 8 - Looking toward Pullman
    [IMG]
I will do more a bit later, probably another batch of four.

Pic 9 - This view of the wild landscape and often half buried tombstones is what you find on this hill now. There are flowers on a tombstone visible in the right hand portion of the picture.

For shots of a cemetery, these are oddly inviting. The bright colors and rolling hills are quite nice.

I've always found the cemetery on a hill to be rather interesting. Not sure if I missed them in your photos... but are there any tombstones there?

Yes there are tombstones up there, I stopped right before that point on what I posted so far. Those are my last sets to post on here. I crashed today on the couch after staying up helping out my sister-in-law with music for her for Ipod thing but will get to more of those by tomorrow.

Pic 10 - Jennie Flenner Tombstone. You obviously cannot see much on these low resolution JPGs, so I have zoomed in on the master RAW files and read them as best as possible. In this case the inscription is -
    Jennie
    Wife of D.B. Fleener
    and mother of S.A. Fleener
    Dec. 26, 1866,
Jan 15, 1891/1894 (not sure on date of death)
You see example of some of the relatively short life spans you would expect from this era and environment on the surviving tombstones.

Pic 11 - Whelan Cemetary - Pic 10 - Tombstone of Margaret Mullen
Yet another young woman that died at a young age, and yet another fallen tombstone still in decent shape for how old it is. She was likely one of the first people buried out here by the looks of it.
    This one reads:
    "Margaret
    Wife of S. Mullen
    ? 8, 1863
    Mar 27, 1888"
Pic 12 - The newest in the entire cemetery and one of the few not needing any "subtitles" for these JPGs. He must have been part of one of the families that is buried up here, as most of the tombstones still present and/or legible predate 1939 by several years if not decades.
    Pic 13 - A now unmarked grave
This is a more common view at this site. There are several of these empty bases, some of them almost totally buried by the wild growth.

Whelan Cemetary - Pic 14 - unmarked grave with a wider view
I like the way the trees form their own unspoken tombstone now.

Is it weird of me to ask what's up with the watermarks?

Not at all. I am "paranoid" and watermark everything I post. Not that anyone would want to steal anything* I post and claim it as their own, but it is a habit that I have kept and likely will do so. As I wrote on my most definitely not updated website once upon a time, I would freely provide non-watermarked images to anyone personally contacting me and giving me cause.

*I at least make any hypothetical person trying that do some odd cropping or removal work. Although going through that kind of effort for any of my work would feel like a compliment almost in some odd fashion.

Why thank you. The cemetery I would love to visit again and photograph was an old (and I do mean old in this case) overgrown one buried so to speak somewhere in the middle of Saint Maarten (not sure anymore if it was the Dutch or French side we were on). Walked around it on my first visit there back in 1996 courtesy of the US Navy and was marveling at the still legible tombstones that went back to the 1690-1720 range for burial dates.
The newer and well maintained burial grounds do have some interesting tombstones, crypts, and sad bits like seeing the 22 year old killed in Korea in 1951 20 years before his parents died (that was in the Moscow cemetery) but the overgrown places have more appeal for me to capture on film.
Now onto some of the more interesting shots in my opinion -
Pic 15 - An isolated grave framed by growth.

Pic 16 - Milton Rogers tombstone
    This reads:
    "Milton M Rogers
    Born
    Sept. 9 1847
    Died May 19, 1899"
    The bottom reads -
"It was hard indeed to part with thee, but Christ's strong arm supported me."

They are lovely pictures. Although the cemetary has become overgrown, it is still very beautiful with the flowers and the trees. Beauty by divine design.
