I didn't watch it, but may try to once it's either reran or on BR. I've also heard the books are pretty good. Anyone read them?

Both good. Read and then watch. You'll likely be overwhelmed otherwise. Lots going on.

Cool, I'll go pick the first one up and check it out. I have a couple other books to finish first, but I'll try to remember to report back.

I was surprised how close the show was to the book.
About half done with the second book now.
    Eagerly awaiting season 2.

The book series is widely regarded, and I would consider it a personal favorite, edging out Lord of the Rings and many other competitors. I've also watched the first (and thus far, only) season of A Game of Thrones, which is a surprisingly faithful adaptation. Both are worth checking out, though the film format and limited budget constrain what can be displayed and unfortunately necessitate the removal of innumerable details that contribute to deeper character and world development. As such, I would read the first and second novel prior to watching the television series, but if you are unable to, don't let that discourage you from enjoying a fantastic adaptation and one of the better shows to hit prime time in years.

I am not a fantasy genre guy, more scifi. But after giving the show a shot it's pretty good but with so much to show, it becomes a lot of short scene. I like what they did, I am lazy ;) So I went with the audiobook (and it's easier to listen than read while working). But the first season is a good adaption of book one.

Now listening to the fifth book, series as a "few" cliffhanger ;)

But one thing I wanted to post about (maybe more in the tilted philosophy or sexuality forum) is the number of scene where sex with 12, 13, 14 years old is implied in the book. It made me realised how much can mentality change in 1 hundred where 3 or 4 generations before us, once a women is flowered, she was wedding material for a men no matter that he was 15 or 50. That being said, I am happy with the current law we have that help protect the kids against pedophile.

There is also a lot of more philosophy that can be discussed from those books.

I was caught from the first episode. 'Sean Bean's in it so I know it'll be good' ... but that was just the beginning. I had become a fan and student of the 'wise tough leader' style of rhetoric when he played 'Sharpe', but with Game of Thrones I could easily imagine that the producer had asked him to do seminars to coach the other actors in his style. So many of them were able to do that 'seasoned warrior opens his mouth and all are captivated'.
As the series progressed, each character came to claim my admiration. I bow down to this series.

Cernunnos ... you say the books edge out Lord of the Rings? Doesn't surprise me, and I look forward to reading them one day.

Trivia: As a fan of everything Stargate, I was well chuffed to see Jason Momoa in it.

So far, so great. The first season was fairly spectacular, if a bit busy. I'm sure it would be financially impossible, but I'd love to see a 24 episode season per book instead of the 10 we had this season. There's so much story to tell in just 10 short hours. The acting is great, the directing is phenomenal, the music is wonderful, the stories are rich and dramatic, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the writing is far above what one should expect for television. It's really good at pulling you on and immersing you in the world.

I look forward to season 2.

I've been a huge fan of the books since college, I was hooked after the first book. Now I'm just waiting for Cinn to finish the 5th book so I can talk to her.

When I finished the 5th book in bed, cinn rolled over and said, "I sense a disturbance in the force."

"Fuck GRRM", was my response and I rolled over. I love the series, but FUCK ME he needs to stop doing his "thing" with characters I love.

Meh, it wouldn't be the same series if GRRM followed the Harry Potter line of character death-off screen, secondary characters that no one really cared about anyway.

The knife twists so hard precisely because you love the characters. I wouldn't trade if for anything.

Loving Game of Thrones - Drogo was more badass than I could have imagined.

I've been reading the books... I know there are some huge cliffhangers and maybe a major death coming up soon in Book 5, so I'm waiting with bated breath... Fucking GRRM, he is merciless...

I'm another one that started reading the books after seeing the HBO series. I'm amazed at how true to the books the series was, but am thankful for all of the extra back story and character development in the books.

I'm nearing the end of Clash of Kings audiobook now. Can't wait to see how that one plays out on screen!

BTW - does the spoiler code work on the new site here yet?

Ok, thanks Baraka - couldn't remember how to do it but found it now :)

discussion / potential spoilers about Clash of Kings...
Anyways, I was surprised at the development of the Theon Greyjoy character, I quite liked him in Book 1 and just didn't see him turning evil. I am also _very_ surprised that they killed off Bran and Ricken. I'm only on chapter 53/70 (Davos is just starting the attack on Kings Landing where I am at in the book) so maybe things change. But yeah, those two things in particular really surprised me - but then again he hasn't been afraid to kill off main characters in the past either. [\spoiler]

I loved reading these books, the first and the third were the best so far, though I haven't finished A Feast for Crows yet. I thought HBO did a great job with the series which got people, like my wife, who will never read the books into this awesome story.

I have enjoyed the books. The most recent one is sitting on a shelf nearby waiting for me to read it. Both my wife and I enjoyed the first season of the show and she hasn't read the books. I'm not sure how they will handle the special effects heavy second season.

    Ourcrazymodern? still, wondering

I found the books violently fascinating. What I've seen of the video series has been a little disappointing, but only because I visualized the characters differently. I did admire how the videos followed the storyline.

I loved the books and I love the show, was really suprised how well they handled taking such a great story and putting it on TV. Just finished reading the most recent book and I like where its heading.
