What is in your arsenal? (Pics encouraged!)

At 25 yards there's not a huge difference between my groups with the Ruger Mark 4 Target (5.5" bull barrel) & my 10/22 with a standard 16" barrel. In my defense, or a lame excuse, I rarely shoot the 10/22.

I need to have a rifle day at an outdoors range. One I've never been to has some 300 yarders, but I'm definitely not ready for that. The municipal range (that has some ludicrously strict safety rules) that I have been to maxes at 100 yards.

 

Part of it is, I have not shot a rifle in years. Just need some practice. I also have my Sears Roebuck magazine fed bolt action, which turns out is a Marlin model 80. Be interesting to compare my accuracy with that vs the ar. I have read one major issue is that the barrel twist for the ar is 1/7, and 22s prefer 1/16 or something. I do need to make a trip to a local range in Aurora that is outdoors and goes to at least 100 yards.

 

I did a bad thing. I bought another brand new gun two or three weeks after buying a new gun. I bought the S&W Shield Plus Carry Comp. For comparison I have my Shield 1.0. Original is with a 7 and 8 round magazine. Plus comes with a 10, 13, and 15 round magazine. 13 round magazine shown. Same vertical height with the 13 compares to the original with the 8. Width is marginally wider. Barrel is 3.1 vs 4.1. Barrel is also compensated to lessen recoil. Trigger is a couple generations newer. Slide already milled for a red dot, which arrived via Amazon yesterday, so I need to mount that still. My first gen would have had to be milled to fit a red dot. Also has a night front sight, but my 52 year old eyes are betraying me st the range. I find it almost impossible to get a clear sight picture and focus on the sight. I can sometimes on the first shot, but then I quickly get blurry. If I put on my reading glasses, I have clear sight picture, but blurry target. I am accurate enough for any person size target, but if I am target shooting its not so fun. I also broke out my 442 detective size 38. That front blade sight was a literal blur. So I think I need to just get rid of that. It's a great pocket gun, 5 rounds of get the fuck away, but it's no fun to go to the range and train. It just has a niche purpose. I also put on the original smaller grips and even 38 target rounds would bite the webbing of my hand.

My wife has the Shield 2.0 Performance Center. It's a great gun, but modern engineering has made the single stack capacity seem ancient.

 

That's where the plus and now the X come in. Nothing is wrong with the 442 revolver, but it's five rounds and is hard to shoot at a distance. In the other hand, you can literally have it in a jacket pocket and fire 5 rounds. No snagging the slide in material on the first shot

 

That's why the Sig P365 replaced my Springfield (made in Croatia) XD-S 9.

And why I like my LCP 2 .380 for pocket carry. Since our laws require the trigger to be covered I carry it in a small thin "tacky" holster, which makes slide obstruction a non-issue. If it's loose in my pocket I'm going pull it from my pocket anyways.

With all that ^ said, I'm going to get the firing pin on my Taurus .38 (model 82, I think) 5 shot snubnose revolver fixed. My wife can get some experience with a snubnose (I hate the term snubby) before we drop $500+ on a S&W Airweight. One factor is the 82 is SS, it's much heavier than the AW.

I just checked the S&W site, I didn't see the Airweight with a full, or partially shrouded, hammer offered.

My 442 is an airweight. I would suggest going with larger grips (like my hogue grips). Adds the pink as part of the grip and also fills in the webbing, making shots more comfortable. Mine is also hammerless.

I know the sigs are pretty darn popular. I already liked my Shield, which had felt like my full size M&P that I carried for my old job. So I knew this would fit comfortably.

 

BTW, just added my new green dot. A Vortex Defender ccw. Looks like it is cowitnessing with the front iron sight. I have not had a chance to take it to the range with the new green dot. Maybe this week. I was planning on bringing my daughters to the range this morning and try my AR with the .22 conversion, and maybe my 9 mm. But my male german shepherd injured his paw on Friday and was still not weight bearing today. So off to the animal hospital. 4.5 hours later, home with clean xrays, antibiotics and pain relievers and nsaids, and an $860 bill. And no time for the range.

 

I'm not sure of Tom's age. If old enough, he could've purchased guns from everyday common retail outlets before registration was required. And he could've inherited and/or been given unregistered guns.

 

That is the least of your worries. Guns can be thrown away. A missing gun registered to him could explained as you took it.

Getting away where he can't find or get to you & the girls is priority one.
