I wonder how much overlap there is between people who carry guns to feel safe from crime and people who advocate the types of social policies which seek to reduce the risk of violent crime for everyone by addressing the root causes of violent crime on a societal level.

Yeah, whatever... what about your spare tire?

    I vote Democrat myself.

Pft. What is this, Tilted Poli-Sci?

You know, if I ever get to a place in my life where I think it's prudent to carry a gun on me at all times, you can be sure that I'm going to be a champion of causes such as anti-poverty, preventing school dropouts, affordable housing, access to health care and rehab programs, and development and reconstruction funding to the neediest neighbourhoods.

Remember, guns don't kill people; destitute, homeless, undereducated addicts do.

Well, and abusive spouses: So I suppose I'd be into programs addressing that as well.

Naw, I wouldn't last long: too atheistic; too socialist.

But seriously, is the average American gun owner more about rugged individualism or welfare state capitalism? How would the average American gun owner respond to my supporting such things as welfare state capitalism? That one of America's chiefest problems is not spending enough on welfare and/or not managing welfare well enough (especially where health care and education is concerned)?

What does the average American gun owner look like? Is there such an individual?

Well, my question was more about style than substance. I used it to make a point.

What does the average American gun owner look like? I don't know. But I do believe that the average American gun carrier rarely shares the ideology of your average liberal democrat.

    Bitter Obama 2012 !!!

    My problem with voting.

    ...

I really love how the American gun owners on TFP totally break the mold. Total curve ball for stereotypes.

Young, physically fit, good jobs, don't smoke dope, vote for people that don't actually like guns a whole lot.

Yea. I actually voted Obama 2012. I thought he would be better for the country than McCain.

Most people here break the mold in one way or another. It doesn't mean anything significant within a larger context.
Three TFP gun owners kind of, sort of, maybe admitted to voting Democrat once. Or maybe they won't vote for Santorum. Those aren't exactly awe inspiring revelations.

Sorry to piss in your cornflakes. Well, no, I shouldn't say that, fuck it.
I pissed in your cornflakes and I was happy to do it.

    Hasta luego!

...about your spare tire pressure and that fire extinguisher in your kitchen.

My spare tire pressure is checked by the oil change place up the street every time I have my oil changed. Which I do religiously.
The fire extinguisher in my kitchen belongs to the apartment complex and they send someone around to check it once a year.
I change my air conditioner filter like clockwork. As well as making sure my dog gets his flea and heartworm prevention every month.

I could go on, but I wouldn't want to bore you with the infinite details that go into my rather finite life on a day-to-day and month-to-month and year-to-year basis.
Any other information you need, you know, to make a final determination about, what, whether I should be toting a gun around with me? Is that what we are talking about?

How are your lightning rods, MM? Is your shark repellant past its use-by date? How are you going to spend the 10,000 you're definitely going to win playing scratch-offs?

He's clearly not looking out for your best interest. As such, I've decided to send you a 12 month supply of Centrum Silver.

I don't take vitamins. They are a waste of money. One should get adequate vitamins and minerals from a healthy, well-balanced diet.

I get my vitamins from black coffee and thinly veiled, smug self righteousness.

I get my vitamins from chewable cartoon cave people.

    Except iron, of course.

No, I get that from the plastic Austrian death machine at my side.

The one that rarely cools and is never without the dried blood splatter of a blue-eyed upper middle class white child.

I have a fire extinguisher in my car and by my bed in addition to the kitchen, cuz Obama has a secret plan to burn me while I sleep. And Pelosi too.
