I find it difficult to fathom that anyone in the US has not at least heard the accusations of "lawlessness" made against Gitmo, but am willing to suspend disbelieve for the moment.

Now that you know, Freetofly, does it change your opinion in any way? Is there a part of you that can understand that what the US is doing in Guantanamo Bay flies in the face of what the US claims to stand for?

I'm not really that surprised. I know people who have completely stopped watching the news or discussing anything regarding the wars and politics. I know several who did after the 9-11 attacks and several who refused to watched, read or listen to anything calling itself "news" after the 2004 election cycle. The part I find puzzling is to hear of someone who had a family member in the middle east at the time of the 9-11 attacks and has a family who debates political issue would not have heard about the alleged "lawlessness" occurring at "Gitmo." Absolutely not saying it's not true, just that I find it puzzling. I know my family has divided into two camps over my grandfather on my mother's side. One group is convinced he was a decent hard working man but just a little misunderstood. The other insists he was a POS who liked little boys a little too much. I always tune the whole things out. Only met the man once, briefly, by accident while shopping with my mother when I was about 5. I suspect the reason I only met him once is because the latter group is likely being more honest about the man. But I have no idea and when they start debating (i.e. yelling) I simply tune them out and or leave.

Freetofly Diving deep into the abyss

You can believe it Tully and Joniemack, after 9/11 I did not eat or sleep for weeks. My thought process was pretty messed up.
When my sister returned from a certain meeting after 9/11 she said something’s that cannot be discussed here.
But messed me up for many years, it was like a spear had pierced by soul. I even thought it might be better to end everything now, instead of seeing what was to come.
I’m not a conservative and not a liberal, I feel left out in the cold with all of this, my fault. But I don’t want to go back to where I was for all those years, afraid to live.
It was hard enough when my son came home after a college education and tells me he joined the marines.
In order to survive in a normal world, I had shut down completely. I have recently started to come back and trying hard to keep my footing. It is not easy.
I will say it again, I was told this was the place to go in order to grow, it is a well rounded place.
