It means that there is more to life than working all day (I assume at a desk/computer), especially if it is causing health problems or life quality problems.

Deal with the money issues and how you save/spend money if you have too over a few months, but having a job or money doesn't mean much if you are unhappy and can't take care of your body.

@ralphie250, coming from a guy who's had none since early October of last year (with no end in sight) I wish I could have your problems. Sex at least 52 times a year?

I would boil a kettle of kittens alive to have a schedule like that!

(In all seriousness, everyone has given some pretty solid advice here. I can't really add to that, so I'm just letting you know the grass looks pretty green over on your side.) :)

I always say, learn to live life for yourself.
Giving is great, don't forget to give to yourself.
Working is great, don't forget you have to live in your body, the company doesn't.

I'm not saying forget about obligations.
But you have an obligation to yourself too.

    One life for you
and hell, even if you believe in reincarnation, do you want that karma carried on with you??

I try for health, because it makes me feel better.
And Mother Nature doesn't care about all the reasons, even the good ones...
it's either done, or it isn't...and boy she's a bitch when it's not taken care of.

  6. Hot water and lemon juice for breakfast is a good start.
I am now twice the weight I was when I was bulimic - so - there are 'good tricks' - like lemon juice and water for brekkie. One of my doctors said a person should never diet for seven days a week - a day off diet and staying relatively good on intake can be the difference between having a life and being in pergatory (or feeling like it).
Find things you can enjoy - I was also too much into working out - cycling and swimming are both very good.
Borrowing a dog for a walk, a run, some vigorous tossing of sticks. Maybe there is someone near you who can not manage to exercise their best mate anymore - I believe that sort of exercise would be instantly slimming as being a bit of an angel, you would have that special lightness :). Do not let owners trade walkies for home made cakes.
Do not abuse the finger down the throat or laxatives. Be healthy - look after your temple whilst you are doing the outside alterations.

Try for 80% compliance as you make changes, @ralphie250.

The trick is to find your balance between eating enough and starvation. Starvation, obviously, will backfire. Eating will actually help you lose weight--so long as you're eating the right foods and coming in below your calorie limit. Aim for a diet high in fiber, healthy fats, and lean protein. No one is saying you need to start eating tofu (though it is delicious, high in fiber, and a lean protein). If and when you stall, we can discuss tactics that would get you through a stall.

I think too many people get too extreme about diets, and while that is a tactic that can work for some people (it works for me, but I have pretty strong willpower when it comes to this stuff), it does nothing but set others up for failure (my mother-in-law).

As others have mentioned, work/life balance is important. Do you have a lengthy commute? If so, I'd suggest prepping snacks and meals ahead of time, using your freezer, and taking your breakfast/dinner with you so that you can eat closer to a normal hour. Actually, I'd suggest that regardless of commute time, as it will save weekday time.

Oh, and one of the upsides of losing weight--you will have more energy. Trust me. When my weight is low for me (135-145), I just want to go, go, go. 30 more lbs to go for me!

I have found I am a stress and comfort eater.

  9. Fucked by the world like myself then ralphie. Is there anything you can do to release stress - when I worked in nightclubs, I would go smash the shit out of empty bottles in the bin - pretending they were the customers who pissed me off - then walk back out with a smile - maybe painted on - but stopped me from biting I should imagine.
If only there were pills of 'good stuff' and 'kindness' - we would both be thin as bean poles.

Here's some academic reading on stress levels and weight: Stress Cortisol Connection

To sum up: Chronic stress can contribute to high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, in the human body. When the human body is chronically stressed, tissue and cellular changes can occur. Continued high levels of cortisol in the body can increase the amount of abdominal fat a person carries around, as the body's response is to collect fat and deposit it in the abdomen; this contributes to obesity. Additionally, high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), and high blood fat content (hyperlipidemia) is associated with elevated cortisol levels. To reduce cortisol levels in the body, increase physical activity, focus on physical activity that helps relieve stress, and choose activities that also help manage stress.

I feel bad that what I'm about to post seems pretty basic compared to what tohers have posted.

Fresh fruit. Try to incorporate some into your diet. You don't have to get carried away.

Eat salads. They don't have to boring. You can use dressing, chopped lunch meat, & cheese to make them more appetizing. That might sound counterproductive, but think of it this way, at least you're adding some fresh veggies that you might not have been eating before.

Walking. This a great way to get at least some exercise, and it's easy on the body if you're out of shape. Start off slowly and work your way up. Don't make yourself so sore that you don't want to continue.

Avoid unhealthy foods. Wean yorself slowly. Cold turkey sounds great in theory, it doesn't work so well in practice.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Sex life. That's a tough one, especially with a young child in the house. For a start y'all could try to add at least one weeknight. It doesn't have to be OMG!! sex. Talk to your wife, see if there is anything you do differently and/or add to the mix.

    What kind of bread?

At a glance, it looks as if you are getting less than 15g of fiber a day if it's white bread. That is definitely not healthy. That's less than half of where you should be--fiber recommendations for a man your age are approximately 35g a day.

You definitely need more vegetables. I'm telling you--you get out of your body what you put into it. A diet of whole foods will go a long way in fixing what ails you regarding your energy levels, and it will help you lose weight.

Personally, I can't imagine ingesting less than 30g a day.

White bread. Its the Kroger brand. Its spicy mustard and blue plate mayo.
What is a good source of fiber?

Vegetables, actual whole wheat (whole wheat pastas and breads are readily available these days--don't fall for the "whole grain" label--actually READ the label), oatmeal, cereals, beans, quinoa, etc. There are a lot of good sources of fiber out there. And as I said previously, fiber is filling, so you can get by with eating less. I would almost guarantee that just by changing your fiber habits, you'll lose weight. Check out: Home | Full Plate Living for more info on a fiber-full way of eating.

I'm with Snowy on this. I don't see a heck of a lot of protein either. Do you not have breakfast because there's no time? The coffee part... meh, I can relate. that's about what I take in as well. But every morning I have eggs of some sort. You should try it.

It literally takes longer to eat than to make: chopped mushroom and onion in the (coconut)oil, break an egg on top, pour about half a cup of egg whites around it, scatter mixed greens like baby spinach and arugula on top, lay on some swiss cheese or goats milk - actually I've been using smelly cheese like Oka these days - let it cook, fold like an omelet.

everything I just said, I cooked this morning in the time it took for my coffee to brew. Eat without ketchup - lots of sugar in it. I ate it while watching the 7 am TSN update on how the Leafs kicked ass against the Kings last night. I was out of the house after I brushed my teeth, so don't think it takes too much time.

The protein kept me full until 11:30, when I had my lunch.

I noticed that your lunches are sammiches. How many slices of meat? I bet your carb to protein ration is WAY in favour of the carb (read sugar). Plus you have a can of pop as a chaser (what's that 10 teaspoons of sugar - the official daily limit from the government of Canada is 5 teaspoons!) and more sugar in the form of chips or pretzels.

I bet you will get advice on switching your lunches to high protein options such as a 4 oz chicken breast cut into a good bed of greens with whole fat dressing such as caesar (home made is better) or a sliced beef steak on greens with balsamic dressing.

I find that losing weigh through exercise is doomed to failure if you don't already have that habit. You may get on the treadmill for a while ,, and feel good and sweaty, but you can't sustain that and lose significant weight. Since eating is already a habit, some of the best approaches is to build a way to be successful in creating change in your eating habits. Buying the stuff that you can readily lay hands on to make the meat salads, or eggy breakfasts with bacon or sausages will make you successful. (I'm 2 years in to losing over 24 lbs doing this and I love eating what I have now. No more sammiches or cereals - except as an exception)

Fruit such as strawberries provide fibre too.

Also forgot two of my personal favorites on the fiber list: avocados and almonds.

I can't really do solid food until I've been awake for a couple hours. If you have the same issue, smoothies or protein drinks are awesome.

Hard boiled eggs make for a quick breakfast. Boil 'em when you have time on the weekend, keep 'em in the fridge. Add a piece or two of fresh fruit to breakfast and to lunch.

    Plus one for more veggies.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I agree with others here, breakfast is key.
You can even do some healthy cereal with milk. I like granolas like Bear Naked. They keep me full for hours.
Ditch the soda. If you don't like plain water try flavored seltzer.
Bring fruit with lunch. Every day.
And a pocket full of almonds makes for good snacking when you get hungry between meals.
