I was on the phone the other night with my mother, and she told me that one of my cousins by marriage had emailed her a thank you for Thanksgiving dinner. My cousin said that her own family didn't really have any traditions surrounding the holidays, and so she really appreciated all of the holiday traditions my own family has. She wanted to know more about them, and my mother told her that some of them were from my grandparents, but a great many were traditions she and my father had made themselves. I agreed with this--some of my holiday traditions come from my parents, like opening presents on Christmas Eve and baking lots of cookies. I've made some of my own as well, like decorating my house with a bowl full of Clementines studded with cloves, making homemade eggnog, and making my own wreath. This also extends to other holidays too--I like to make latkes for Hannukah, even though I'm not Jewish.

    What are your holiday traditions?

I traditionally do whatever the ladies tell me to do. It works better that way, heh.

Usually spend Christmas day at my parents house, eat breakfast, watch the kids unwrap gifts, eat more, watch tv, eat more, nap.

Lately me any my wife and daughter will open our presents the night before and have our own Christmas at home, before going anywhere else. We haven't really ironed out what the traditions will be yet.

when i wa younger, the family used to cut and sell christmas trees. when the season was over, usually around 6:00pm christmas eve, we'd light a big bonfire of the leftover trees and eventually repair to the kitchen for shrimp cocktail. to this day, christmas eve isn't christmas eve without shrimp cocktail - with extra horseradish in the cocktail sauce...

We used to have a tradition where we'd help our mother bake sugar cookies, then ice them.
Since she's gotten older she hasn't felt up to it, and my brother and sister are busy with their families.

For the past five years we've had Christmas Eve dinner at my bro-in-law's brother's house and all the kids get to open a few of their presents.
On Christmas Day, we either go to my sister's or brother's houses. Depends on who feels like hosting that year.
Kind of a wonky tradition, but it works.
