The victory of Narendra Modi and the Hindu nationalist BJP in the Indian election is causing much anguish, especially among the Muslim minority.

Mr. Modi was chief minister of Gujarat at the time of the anti-Muslim riots there.

He didn't run on nationalism, he ran on getting toilets and sewage systems in every home in India.
Modi is like the Huey Long of India, heavy on the populism but with a fair amount of darkness.

The real question is who is he going to put in the supporting roles?
India has a long history of a unchanging civil service which can be both good and bad.
If he goes in and slams around like a bull in a china shop it could have major repercussions both good and bad.

The thing is, he can't get too riled up. India can't be America's back office and have strife.

I also loved how little coverage there was of the election here in the USA.
An election that will effect the course of a third of the world and we have barely a mention?
John Oliver had a great rant.

A question directly related to this thread: Can you reccomend a good book (preferably not an academic snoozer) about the history of India? India fascinates me, and repulses me.

A comment only sort of related to this thread: I thoroughly enjoyed the novel (yeah, a novel) A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.

Not India, but some similar issues...

I am curious to see if the Indonesian presidential election is being covered in the US.

Indonesia is the third most populous democracy and the world's biggest population of Muslims.

Indonesia held their election yesterday, but the election results won't be announced until July 22.

I guess it takes a while to count the votes.

Looks like there's a new era in India for government workers.

"— orders to clean work spaces, shorten forms, weed out old files and review goals."

    Less privs, more work.
Now the US and other countries are not as bad...but there's still a principle of getting your fucking job done.
    Politicians too.

Can we get a law that we can fire them quickly if they do NOT do their work or voting??

No golf, long days are new norm for India’s bureaucrats
