I still don't understand the need for a placebo group. The general population should act as the control set. If I didn't know if I was given the real thing or not, I would still try to avoid any contact or risks.

A treatment/cure would be the better option, but I will believe it when we start seeing the results in the world data. I also would be interested in knowing how fast different countries implemented this if it is found to work.

Well, if we’re being realistic and honest
    There’s often been unrealistic expectations.
It isn’t magic, it isn’t Hollywood.

The world is developing solutions in unprecedented times.
The pace in comparison to what’s typical is phenomenal
People easily forget, this has only been half a year
From when they ACTUALLY took it serious (February to March) to now.
The governments were confused or negligent
Scientists based it on the flu and older illnesses
    Everyone underestimated it.
It took the system awhile to gear up and redirect attention and resources

Now, really only 4-5 months later, are we seeing real movement forward medically.
They’ve reduced deaths, learning what works and what doesn’t
Added in care and symptom meds and methods
Antivirus is being spun out quick
    It’s just now safety testing.
Making sure we don’t die or harmed by it. (we don’t want that do we??)
    Again it isn’t magic
Normally FAST, “from scratch” development would be 4 years.
What normally comes out is stuff we’ve been doing for decades or years, the system setup to kick it out.

The things that had to be figured out, in immediacy and priority.
    1. Prevent death - something to keep people from dying with a new unseen twist (let’s give the docs and medical a hand for dealing a MASH scene)
    2. Diagnosis - ACCURATELY know what is happening (again, no tests for it) and results were often wrong.
    3. Methods to prevent - training the public and medical staff to keep it under control (much less convincing them and making it consistent)
    4. Meds that help symptoms
    5. Antivirus to PREVENT (including getting producers to do it, change their system, push it out...AND getting people to take it) and it’s no guarantee.
    6. “A cure” - can there be one??? Maybe...
Again, no guarantee...may be years, maybe decades

    People are often like kids
    Impatient, unrealistic, petty, brattish, etc...
    Saying “just fix it!”
Mass deaths and harm is just the driver.
    But it just doesn’t “happen”

    I think we’re doing good...it’s moving forward
Could have it been BETTER??? Absolutely, no doubt about it. We fucked up. (The world, that is...some better, some worse)

But that’s what complaining and elections are for.

The key is...next time, let’s do it better.
    It’s not if...it’s WHEN

I’m chomping at the bit like others, I hate this.
But I’d rather live, I’d rather not go through the shit of being sick with it.

We’ll see an antivirus in a few months
But it won’t be a CURE.
It’s just another step to prevent and minimize.

A cure??? That company/person is going to get rich. (Or richer)

Playing "What if..." is like beating your head against the wall. But in some cases it is at least entertaining.

What if China had been totally honest about the Corona virus from the start?

Would've political leaders around the world taken the virus more seriously much earlier?

Would've public healthcare officials came up better containment plans earlier?

What difference would've an earlier start made to medical researchers, private and public?

The Corona virus obviously caught many people, with the exception of some folks in China, by surprise. Initial confusion was to be expected. Some leaders took the virus seriously, others less so. Some leaders eventually came around, some are still stubbornly dragging their feet and/or are still clueless. I'll let you judge where our political leadership in the US belongs.

If we had known how serious Corona virus was, say by the end of February (a semi-arbitrary date), how much further along would the treatments and vaccination testing be?

The world suffered from the Chinese withholding information (Are they still doing so?). The US has suffered from the narcissism and stubbornness of Donald Trump, and the leaders who follow his lead.

Yes, China suppressed what was going on... But actually, most top leaders in China were surprised too.
From what I understand, the lower level politicians and officials covered it up first...from their own country, leaders and Beijing.

It wasn't until things were getting so out of hand and tons dying, that Beijing finally got wind of it.
That's when they sent in the military, told everyone to stay home "or else" (and when China says that, they don't mess around, none of this "freedom" BS ...you do it or dead)
And we spied them by satellite, burning a huge load of "carbon" (We say all the bodies, they called it infected "food")

It's THEN that the top started locking it down, repressing everything, keeping the death count lower, etc.
Even now, we're still not getting real numbers or stories out of them. (it's easy to see...look at their percentages in comparison to more transparent countries)

IF they had said something at first, that would have been in December.
IF we would have reacted throughout the world...since most post-industrial countries were distracted by Xmas and New Year's, that would have been January.
Still would have taken the medical and scientific community some time to change their minds and get some clue, that would have been February.
So I estimate we lost 2 months by China's lack of admission.
But 2 months means 10,000's of people alive or unharmed.

I don't know about other countries, but in the US what's causing more deaths and harm is the confusion & chaos by not having the Federal government being on top of it
Being inconsistent and actually trying to ignore or twist the actual truth.
So all the lower government layers (state, county, official groups, etc), they're all given confusing messaging, inconsistent, left on their own, even opposed at times from the Fed
To the point, quite a few are combative, rebellious and want to ignore and twist the truth further...and not do what's right.
Thus the record death count in the world, currently held by the States. (BTW, there's likely about 25% MORE deaths and hospitalizations, than officially given ~ 225,000)

So there's LOTS of blame to go around.
And honestly, there's more fuckups and to blame in the future.

Other countries are going through their own trials, fuckups...and people who are rebelling.
It's just that the US is doing it "so well"
Although, it's not as bad as Russia, Venezuela or India...IF those countries had good tracking or transparency, they're just as bad as China, for various reasons.
...so I guess America's not completely incompetent or uncaring.

I'm thinking between China's reluctance to be honest, and Trump's stupidity, we lost a four months. What exactly could've been accomplished in that time is unknown, but getting the PPE distribution and testing in some kind of order would've been a start.

Came across this decidedly slanted column recently (aren't they all, though?) in the New York Times by Paul Krugman, The Cult of Selfishness is Killing America:

Do you all agree? Are Americans suffering at the hands of those who callously disavow their duties to the greater social contract? Would we be in a better place with respect to the coronavirus response in the US were it not for selfishness?

I'll need to use the laptop for a longer reply, but I think that we US Americans are spoiled and greedy. The degrees vary, but generally speaking, yes, we are.

I apologize for going off topic a bit...
I don't always agree with Jerry Brown (at times he earned his Moonbeam nickname), but in an interview, 60 Minutes I think, he made some very good points on how the US could turn things around if the citizens would be willing to let more of their money go to the effort. I need to see if I can find the interview, and post a link.
