Vermont? Maine? Those states seem like they have an earthy culture that would be fairly accepting of facial hair.

The beard is very big right now in the more cosmopolitan cities of the south, as well. I saw a lot of them on men in both Atlanta and Asheville this summer. And not just young men - men of all ages and from all walks of life. They are on an upward trend right now...and I hope it lasts. :)

You are probably right. I overlooked that one. Too NY/NJ/Philly-centric with the NE comment.

Us men in da south like to be different. Guess that's why there's more down Herr than up north so to speak

  7. So this video just came out on Tuesday. It seems strangely relevant.

WARNING: It's extremely silly and stupid, in typical Psychostick style.

If I grow a beard, it trends toward the ZZ Top look pretty quickly. That wasn't acceptable when I got into this profession; but it's fine now. I'm fine with it in the summer; but it ices up when I ski. Practicality trumps laziness for me.

I was in a meeting today at a Fortune 500 company in the Midwest and thought of this thread. There were four other men in the room. One was executive level. Of the three middle manager types (all clearly white collar professional types), two had short boxed type beards.

I don't think it detracted from their professionalism or how I viewed them.

21 votes so far in favor of legit beards.

I'd say TFP has a beard bias.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the company's "unofficial" policy re beards needs to be considerred. An attractive well-groomed beard that suites the man and his profession might not sit well with his boss(es) even if there is no official no beards policy.

One company I worked for had no policy re beards. The hands-on owner wouldn't say a thing about a beard. Yet the unwritten and unspoken no beards policy was made very clear. I suppose in our litigious world someone could've sued him, but they would've been standing in a very long line.

we here at the international fraternity of bearded gentlemen approve of this thread.
however, we are confused by the ambivalence that appears from time to time in it.
let us put your minds at ease by answering some commonly asked questions.

    Q. is it necessarily the case that, once a gentleman begins to grow a beard, that he will try to grow it as long as possible?
    A. sooner or later, yes.

    Q. what are the advantages of sporting a beard?
    A. fabulousness plus an unnaturally large head.

    Q. what are the disadvantages of sporting a beard?
    A. mayonnaise and related condiments can lodge in them.

    Q. can a beard be professional?
    A. my mother appears to see in my beard a source of anxiety. she also fancies herself something of an expert on the topic. she wants me to resemble paul krugman. i ignore her.

    Q. was the previous question about your mother?
    A. no. no, it was not.
