Where has your car been?

My Subaru WRX wagon has been the vehicle that has traveled the most. It has been to Montreal and Mont Tremblant. It has also been to several VT ski resorts like Sugarbush, Killington, Mount Snow, etc. It has also been to Key West. This was all out of living outside of Washington, D.C. It has also made the journey to Colorado, and from there Tucson, AZ. It's sitting at 188,000 miles, and it's engine was replaced at 127,000. I just replaced the radiator for the second time, and just now changed the oil. So where has your car been?

All over the Western United States. I wasn't necessarily the one driving it, though, as I got the car from my folks, and they have driven it lots of places. Personally, I've driven it mostly in Oregon, as I got it before entering graduate school and didn't have much time to travel during that phase of life. It has about 224k miles on it.

My previous car had been all over, too. It was also an inherited family car. On family trips as a teen, that Volvo wagon went to Reno, Las Vegas, San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, Zion Nat'l Park, Bryce Nat'l Park, all over Washington, all over Oregon, and nearly the entire length of 101 from San Francisco to Astoria, OR. I drove the car at points on those trips. As an adult, I drove it to the Redwoods and all over Oregon and Washington, and to Vancouver, B.C. When we sold it, it had about 224k miles on it, too.

We certainly don't have the car anymore, but I helped my SO drive her '90s model Toyota Celica from the Vancouver area to Toronto. We didn't do it "efficiently" though. I hadn't seen much of Canada at all (besides southern Ontario and southern Quebec), so we chose a scenic route and camped along the way.

We travelled through Jasper (in the stunningly gorgeous Canadian Rockies) to Edmonton, Alberta, then went south to Calgary to visit her grandparents. We went through the Badlands/Drumheller, Alberta, where lies one of the richest deposits of dinosaur fossils in the world. We then went east through Regina, Saskatchewan, then to visit her grandmother in rural Saskatchewan. (The province is boring, but it's the breadbasket of Canada.) We then went through Winnipeg, Manitoba. In Ontario, we went through Thunder Bay and pretty much hugged the Great Lakes until we reached Toronto.

I'm not sure how much we drove, but the "efficient" way would have been around 4,200 km (2,600 mi).

One of my dream vacations is to do that in a Eurovan. There is so much of Western Canada I want to see. I've already crossed North America via train; I'd like to do it via car, and since I've already been across the United States, Canada is next. I'm sure a large part of it is boring, but nothing else will provide that sense of how large our continent is. I'd like to extend my trip past Toronto and drive all the way to the Maritimes; being an Anne of Green Gables fan, I have some stuff to see on PEI.

    DO IT!

Saskatchewan, to the uninitiated, can have different effects. To the pensive or contemplative types, it can instil a sense of the sublime, given its vastness, its flatness, and its fertility. We take for granted such landmasses. In many places overseas, a place like Saskatchewan must be viewed as nothing short of a blessing.

I need to visit more of Quebec and the Maritimes. First, Montreal and Quebec City are simply awesome. If you haven't been there or spent much time there, be sure to stop!

As for the Maritimes, I've only been there once. A quick stopover outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia, before going on to St. John's, Newfoundland. St. John's is absolutely gorgeous, and the people are super nice. I was there for less than 24 hours though, which is a shame. I need to go back and see more of those provinces. I also want to tour New England.

  6. My 2000 Chevy van has been all over lower Michigan, northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, several times. It has been to Clearwater, FL and New York City. It has made trips to Louisville, St. Louis and Kansas City. At various times, it has been loaded with kids travelling to chess tournaments, rock and roll equipment and college-bound belongings. It has had heater failure at below 0*f and ac failure at 100+*f. It has over 195,000 miles on the original engine. The trans has been rebuilt once. The graphic wrap still pictures our original drummer. Our current (for four years) drummer bitches about that...a lot.

My del sol has been to hell and back, after being stolen and rebuilt. Tango once drove us to Big Sur and back on 101. Its also traveled around the pacific NW, and taken Sam to the ocean more than once.

I dont drive long distances, but my car and I love tagging along.

I had my first car stolen by my good friend. I was at a military boarding school in front royal, Virginia. This kid was a year younger, from new York City. He had trump shuttle tickets to fly out of dulles airport for flights back home to visit his family. I taught him how to drive stick shift on my subaru wagon. We were supposed to go skiing that weekend at Massanutten ski hill. So he tells me that he has to put something in my car. So I'm in the shower after sports. Get out, and kids start telling me that charlie took my car. Turns out he really wanted to get kicked out of military school,so he took my car and drove it from Virginia to new York to go home. His family's attorney drove it back on Sunday. He did this without a license,in the car that I taught him how to drive stick shift.I never spoke to him again.

  10. I've only had my civic since 2008. It went from 20K miles when I bought it to currently 93k.

She's been all over Ohio and took me to Nashville for a rugby tournament. We also went to Chicago to visit a friend.

About a year and a half after I bought her, she took me across the nation from Ohio to Oregon. That was a fun trip. Since landing in the PacNW, she's only been to various parts of Oregon and Washington. Mostly rugby related.

She mainly travels around town these days as we use the family Prius to go on longer trips. We've only been to San Francisco and Seattle with that fella.

My 2011 Golf TDI has been in North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, though home is Florida. The hubs says it loves the mountains. I got it off the truck with 10 miles on it in October 2010. It's currently at 92,248. I love this thing.

My 2007 Rav4 has driven from:

    - Toronto to Halifax, via Kingston, Montreal, New Brunswick - Fredericton - Moncton (yes we did the Magnetic Hill), Charlottetown PEI, and back via Montreal and Ottawa. Second time I made that trip I returned by going through Bangor Maine by going south through New Brunswick. Saw the Paul Bunyan statue and Stephen King's house, then drove through New Hampshire back up to Quebec.
    - Toronto to NYC
    - Toronto to Cleveland (Rock & Roll Museum & Hall of Fame) via Niagara Falls and Buffalo
    - Toronto to Richmond Virginia, Virginia Beach and back through Lancaster Pennsylvania
    - Toronto to Washington DC and then back through Delaware
    - Toronto to San Antonio TX, driving through Detroit (!!!), Ohio, Kentucky (there's caves there, who knew?), Tennessee, Arkansas and then Austin and San Antonio. That's a long drive, and hot in the summer

My 1979 Honda Civic drove from Toronto to Thunder Bay (that's on lake Superior, on the Canadian side north of Duluth) via the big ferry from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island and back through the 'northern route' on the Trans -Canada. That's about 1,000 km one way, all in a single province.

My 1982 Chevette drove from Toronto to Vancouver taking over 5 days driving entirely on the Canadian side of the border (More expensive gas, shorter distance) traversing most of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the beautiful mountains of British Columbia. Used it to drive all around the interior of BC and then return to Toronto.

Daihatsu (~circa 1990's) - Southern CA, Vegas, to OKC and back...and down to Cabo thru Mexico and back. (that's a story in itself)
Charade (~circa 2000's) - Across North America, up & down the East Coast
Sentra (~circa 2010's) - From CT to VA, mostly around the DC/Baltimore area...lots of commuting

Planning on getting another car soon...and I'm planning on traveling a lot. (I'm commuting by train mostly these days, so that won't add the mileage)
I always drive cars in the ground, not by abuse...but just long ownership.
I prefer, no nonsense, hyper-efficient, no fuss cars.
Just get me from A to Z.

But I may go for a Lexus this time.

My Mini cooper was a good road tripper. It went from So Cal to NorCal, from SoCal to Ohio, Ohio to Florida, Ohio to upstate NY... But we said bye to it in Ohio.

Hubby's Beetle has been through similar hell and back, even more miles. SoCal-NorCal, road trip honeymoon around the national parks and forests West of the rockies, to Ohio and back to CA a few times, Ohio to Montana through the Badlands... Across the northern border to Toronto and back, and finally from Ohio to Texas. Pretty sure it will go through a lot more miles in the years to come.

Hubs is pretty sure he doesn't want me making the drive in my car when we move. :( I was actually kinda looking forward to it. Three days with the cats in the car across the entire country. But in my awesome car!
