Gulf of Mexico Expedition - NOAA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ship, Okeanos Explorer, has been conducting exploratory investigations in the Gulf of Mexico basin. They've got a live stream going on, which is pretty cool.

A few links, if you'd like to watch, too:

This is the stream that I've been watching today, which is the view from the Remotely Operated underwater Vehicle, Deep Discoverer. [/URL]

This page has three different streams, the one from the ROV, one from the ship, and one that shows the data and maps along with the ROV view.

They're diving in Keathley Canyon today, and while most of it so far has been fairly barren, I've seen some fish and a cool looking bamboo coral, and yesterday they studied a brine pool. Check it out! I'll try to update if they come across something really cool :)

Looks like they've stumbled across a few interesting-looking creatures in the past 10 minutes or so...which, of course, meant people started coming in and calling at work.

They also found a bit of trash. Boo.

Very cool...I'm always fascinated by this.

I spent some time creating a program for the NOAA...to track their scientists' projects in the Hydrogeology department. (flood basins and such...)
    They're like herding cats sometimes...
Also as an IT Subject Matter Expert for their International division. (they are the ones sharing all the data from all the participating nations globally)
They were a little start & stop...hard to get them to move forward.

But many think all they do is weather...not realizing its all connected together, one affects the other.

I wish I could do deep dives like them.
If they're going into canyons...then you need to be really skilled to do that.
It all is an adventure...but they take it really seriously, crunching the numbers...
I used to love hearing about their stories and ideas.

This has my interest. I'm about a 35 minute drive from the GOM.

ROV Cam! (same stream from yesterday, this is my favorite view.)

They're exploring two shipwrecks today, going for a 10 hour dive. Live stream until ~8:30 pm EST!

They're heading into Bryant Canyon today, and taking their time getting to the seafloor. There are some nifty looking creatures being spotted on the way down, like this dude:

(quality isn't fabulous, just a screen capture on my laptop.)

You can also "meet" the expedition team here.

Didn't catch the official name of this guy, but it was fun to watch:

I had a couple more screen caps, but I seem to have accidentally saved over them....oops.

That last one is a squat lobster...which I first misheard as "rock lobster" and immediately started dancing, singing the song in my head. :)

The Explorer is diving near the Sigsbee Escarpment today...not quite the deepest part of the Gulf, but close to it.

Today should be an interesting dive...they're exploring a suspected shipwreck site. It's been seen on sonar, but never explored "in person." Should be on the sea floor by 10:45 am EST.
