Making a kitchen knife for my sister, for a belated birthday present. The blade is done except for final sharpening. The handles need a final coat of polyurethane and to be attached. Like my other knives, it is 1084 high carbon steel. Because it is not a stainless and it does have wood handles, it will always need to be hand washed. Also, acids like tomatoes will stain the metal, adding a patina over time. This is my first kitchen knife, and fourth knife completed. [IMG]

So at some point everyone wants to make a big chopper. Whether it's to take down small saplings or overthrow banana republics in Latin America or prepare prepare for the zombie apocalypse, you need a big ass blade. Now that I have cut the basic profile,I have realized that I don't know how I'm going to heat treat it. It's much too big for what I have currently used as a forge.

These guys in California might be able to do that for you. I know my dad raves about how great their blades are.

Well it's the heat treating I need. But I think I can make it work. If I ever get to the point that people want to start purchasing knives and I start doing them in batches, then I will send them off for heat treating. I know one place charges much less for bulk. Three blades would cost around 75 dollars. But 20 blades would be just over 100.
