While I don't think I'll ride to work on "Bike To Work Day" (a REALLY long ride...scary too)
I may ride my bike BEFORE going to work.
    Representing still

I think I'm going to pick up a kettlebell tomorrow with some birthday money I received. I'll get a 35-pounder. It will allow me to do pull-focused circuit training, which I'm needing very badly to counterbalance my push-oriented martial arts training. I'll need to start this cross-training if I want to keep advancing in my fitness/ability.

I got my lab results back yesterday:
Total triglycerides 105 Normal is <150
Total cholesterol is 132 Normal range is 125-200
HDL cholesterol is 44 Normal is >or=40
LDL cholesterol is 66 Normal is <130
Total cholesterol/HDL ratio is 3.0 Normal is <0r=5

Everything was great except for a slightly elevated creatine level (kidney function)

The last paragraph of the cover letter encouraged me to "continue with your low cholesterol and low sodium diet and exercise." Good conventional advice, except that the diet I follow is a high fat and protein diet with plenty of green leafy stuff, fruits, a small amount of legumes, a smaller amount of "healthy whole grains" and no sugar and little refined white carby stuff like flour, rice, or potatoes.

And, although I'm not a salt hog, neither do I pay any attention to it.

In a couple of weeks I meet with a "registered dietary professional" (because insurance pays for it):) so I need to sharpen up my knowledge of the latest research into the "fad diet" that has helped me stay slim and trim for over ten years.

    Should be fun.:D

Ramping up the squats today. 30 minutes on bike, and warmup, followed by warmup squats 2 sets of 5 ramping up to a workout of 5 sets of 5 reps with 315 pounds. Geeeez I'm worn out now. I think this will work. I'll just add 5 pounds a week to the 5x5 until I get hyoooge, or dead. One or the other.

So I picked up a kettlebell, and now I'm wondering why I didn't do this years ago.

After a light workout, I easily felt it hitting some weak spots, mostly up my posterior chain (as expected). This is certainly the direction I needed to go.

I plan on doing a workout based on this one: The 10,000 Swing Kettlebell Workout | T Nation

Since I'm working it in with my 3-day/week martial arts training, I'll be doing it two days a week. That will bring my training to five days a week, which is plenty. I did two shortened circuits based on this program, and it was a lot of work for me. I will continue to do lighter workouts based on this to ease my body into it. I'm mostly concerned about my lower back. I need it to get a bit stronger before I start doing full workouts of this kind.

I think circuit training like this will generally be suitable for me, as it will also build on my cardio and muscular endurance. That will certainly help me during those 5-minute rounds on the mat. :D

I'll keep you guys posted on any progress.

Just got done with a 30 day super cut and I'm about to do it again. Gained some muscle on top of cutting some body fat. Using calibres I bought off of amazon, I am around 15% (most of the things around the web I have read says they can be off around 4%). I'm doing Crazy Kuts (a 30 day cut) and then Fury v2 (A cut I just got off of) then two workouts for the 30 days leading up to con.

I am eating around 1800 calories a day and will stay that way for a few months. It's low but I'm doing good with it. Been on it for a few weeks. One less meal a day with carb sliding.

Happy with what I got but I'm ready to get down to around 9%-10% bf. Show off the abs for Dragoncon and halloween. Then a good proper bulk to gain some mass, head towards Dwarf shaped.

I posted a pic in the members forum.

I've been doing yoga three mornings a week, kendo twice a week, and getting 2 to 3 rides in a week. I've also been drinking less beer and somewhat less food.

I've already noticed a difference in my movement in kendo and posture in general.

I am going to make the leap to weights at some point. I want to get my cardio back to where I am happy with it first.

I started running. It sucks. But I'm doing it. Took me 4 attempts to complete the first day of C25K, due to the headache and blood pressure issue, but I completed day 2 last night. Yoga is still tough with the upside down thing. The meds help but also cause overheating. Imma do it, though.

If I keep it up with this kettlebell, I'll have glutes of steel by summer.

    Ready for the beach.

Got down to 250...10 more lbs to go for my goal.
was at 20% BF...want to be at 15%.
    10% is competition level...I don't want that.

It's been a long process...I started at 285 at the end of my marriage...and couldn't climb a flight of stairs without getting out of breath.

Now, if I can just get rid of this damned allergy which makes me cough like a bull moose...and scares everyone to death.
I'm going to have my doc refer me back to the allergist....and start taking those shots. I need to be able to breathe. No matter the season.
I can't afford to let this continue...it's a matter of life or death, sooner or later.

PF Friday did bike and some leg work on machines.
Saturday at home did some band work for arms and shoulders and some stretching
Today (Sunday) Bench 135 225 274 315 for 3 sets of 5 each and two singles with 365. Lots of stretching between and band work for shoulders.

Because of memorial day weekend our dealership was trying to finish strong. Which didn't happen. But because I was at work so much my workouts were severely curtailed. Last worked out Monday and then today. My left knee still isn't quite right, so no leg presses or leg extensions today. Just front squats working up to 235x5x2. Calf raises, leg curls, and threw in a couple sets of dumbbell lunges, which I had not done in months. At least my forearm is doing much better from when I injured back in November.

1.5 hours of bike riding...I'll be increasing steadily.

Hey you try getting 250 lbs up and down hills. (and the bike's solid with big tires so it can support my heavy ass)
    Oi vey

Aside from the benefits to my strength and muscular growth, another benefit is combating depression. Even though my job sucks I have been on a slightly more even keel. I was doing very poorly yesterday but a workout evened me out.

    30 min of biking yesterday
today warmup and 5x5 with 315 in squats. The weight is not very heavy, but my form seems to be breaking down. I am still trying to get used to lifting shoes, apparently.

30 minutes of cardio. Trying to do something every day. Even if it's not much.

That's how I got back into it after my unhappy separation from the patrol. I was pretty seriously depressed but made myself go. My weight workouts were often 6 or 8 sets in the beginning and no cardio. But I figured half assed was better than no assed. Eventually my mood and conditioning improved and I am still going at it 8 months later. Which is one of my longest most consistent stretches.
To go along with that, today I bench pressed 275x4 reps, which is pretty damn good for me.

^^^Good progress. I definitely think that a little at a time will get you there.

I'm at a low point in my energy, so backing off of the heavy stuff is probably a good idea. I'm going to cycle through some easier workouts for a bit, then form a plan and progress from there. I'd really like to hit a 500# squat for my 50th birthday next summer. 400# bench would be nice too. Gonna have to get some training from an expert for that, I think.

Benching tonight. I might stick with sets of 10. For some reason benching in the 5 rep range hurts my shoulders more, even when I'm using the same weights...
