Big government had little to do with the decline of Detroit. No doubt the government of the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit must shoulder some blame, but many people see "big government" as the federal government. The UAW got "too big for its britches" and pushed union wages way too high. The Big Three (TBT) automakers got lazy and were designing and making crap cars, the late '70s could be an arbitrary time line, and they failed to take the foreign competition seriously. (Yes, many of the foreign imported cars from the '60s were "tin cans" and "jokes," but TBT should've been paying attention as foreign car companies began improving their products). And of course there are many other factors (find the threads for details).

I think you are confused. This is not a conservative meme. Conservatives have been attacking intelligence and education for decades. And they have never truly been about morals. Otherwise they wouldn't discriminate against women, minorities, gays, religion, etc.
