Bill Paxton died suddenly on Saturday from complications following heart surgery. He was 61 years old. An incredibly versatile actor, he elevated each scene of which he was a part. Though he was familiar to me prior to his role as Hudson in my second favorite Alien movie, "Aliens," I never forgot him afterwards. Last Halloween upon checking out the seasonal movie offerings I happened upon his first directorial offering "Frailty." His work in that makes me shudder, it's that good. Rest in peace Bill Paxton.

What were your fave Bill Paxton performances? Here's some good ones:

    Perfectly said, Patton Oswalt!

This was my first exposure to Bill as the asshole vampire in Near Dark and I still think it ranks as one of his better roles.

Confession: I only knew of Bill Paxton from a couple of movies that I thought totally sucked, the leader being Twister. In my defense I'm not a movie person.

It seems that he was a talented & versatile actor. RIP.

I really did not appreciate him in Twister nor Titanic. I remember saying about Titanic that they could have subbed in "any" actor for that role. In his defense, he showed up and it was a paycheck.
I'm glad that I'm finding out about a number of his projects that I hadn't sought out before. I had no desire to see "Frailty" when it came out--probably a choice I made based on having a young child at home, having to get a sitter, etc. Now I will totally watch it seasonally via streaming. It is so goddamn chilling. Have never seen Near Dark or Weird Science and now, will.

Fantastic! I remember this from Dr. Demento. Now I have an earworm.

Sad news. Oddly enough I just enjoyed an interview of him about 2-3 weeks ago on the Dan Lebatard show on ESPN. He was on there to talk about his new show Training Day, but anyone familiar with that particular radio show knows their interviews range far and wide. Bill Paxton seemed like an incredibly down to earth and good humored guy, willing to talk about some of his early and awful works and laugh at himself for them. While I can't say that I was necessarily a huge Paxton fan to the point where he'd be a draw for me, I did sincerely enjoy many of the roles I saw him in. IMO Big Love, especially the early seasons, is very underrated.

Seriously if you haven't seen Near Dark, it really is an almost perfect low budget vampire movie.
It was Kathryn Bigelow's second movie as director, has Lance Henriksen as the 'father' of a vampire family where Bill Paxton is the asshole oldest son.
    So damn good.

That's good to know. I've seen interviews where some actors just barely play along when discussing their "early and awful works" while others, such as Bryan Cranston, get a real laugh out of just how bad they were.

Vampire movies aren't my thing, but I'll add
Near Dark to my list. I really enjoy From Dusk Till Dawn (first one) and want to see The Hunger (which several FDPers helped me ID when I had the description but not the name).
