Watches

Discussion in 'Tilted Gear' started by genuinemommy, Sep 7, 2016.

  1. I am interested in getting an apple watch......I didn't really know anything about it. I thought it would totally replace my phone. I don't want to carry my phone, because I always set it down and thus, lose it. If I wore it all the time, then I wouldn't lose it. I would assume i need to carry my phone around though too...to you know, talk to people instead of holding my wrist up in an awkward position.

You can use the air pods to talk on the Apple watch :) hubs had one, loved it, hated the phone. He has an S8 and a Samsung Gear S3 or whatever watch. Looks good, works well, and entertains me with the SOS feature.

I really want one as well, for MOSTLY practical reasons. They're pretty great for wheelchair users as we can't always be digging into a purse or bag for phone, and talking on phone means being at a complete standstill. The impractical reasons are because they have neat apps and look pretty spiffy.

I've had watches over the years. Usually a cheap timex from walmart or something like it. I always wound up putting it on a belt loop or keeping just the watch body in my pocket because I couldn't stand how they felt on my wrist.

About a year ago, around the time I got a few other crazy ideas in my head, I decided to get a g-shock and looked up what would be the best for my purposes. Eventually I saw a used rangeman on craigslist and it was such an amazing deal I couldn't skip it. I'm glad I didn't.

I've always agreed with the saying that if you hand someone your watch they shouldn't wonder where the rest of it is. You don't need a small boat anchor but a watch should have a comforting weight to it and this one definitely does. Not so heavy as to be annoying or leave you feeling off-balanced but not so light as to be insubstantial and cheap feeling. With a simple black zulu strap it sits almost perfectly on the back of my wrist and is surprisingly inoffensive for its size.

For a lot of people the ABC sensors are probably a gimmick but I've gotten a lot of usage out of mine. Compass and map are my go-to method for navigating even around town and it's saved my ass a few times when out hiking, and the barometer is a nifty heads up that i might be about to get rained on.

If I ever buy a metal dress watch I might go for another G-shock.

LG Tones. I've heard nothing but positives and well-intentioned criticisms about them. The battery life is good, the sound quality and microphone solid, and they're comfortable to wear and use. It's like the benefits of an handsfree earpiece without looking like an absolute walnut for wearing one.

@Shadowex3 Nice looking watch! :) Love that it has a compass and map, that would be handy in many situations. I like many women have small wrists and finding a non child style watch can be tricky. Would wear one for sure though if it was tiny and had an internal compass.

Oh neat the LG Tone is a headset! Never had heard of it, and I have an LG Phone. >.< Thanks very much for the suggestion! :D

This is my citizen eco-drive and my daily companion. It basically only comes off if I am working on my car or something similar. Otherwise it's 24/7. I have had it for probably 15 years. It is the titanium band and bezel, so it's surprisingly lightweight. Aside from the inside of the band, it has very few scratches. I have another watch at home for occasional wear. I will take a pic of that when I'm at home.[IMG]

No map, I use my phone or paper maps for that. It's just got a Compass, Barometer, and an Altimeter that works based off the barometer (hence "ABC" watch). And don't underestimate your ability to wear a watch like this, remember I've got a tiny 6 inch wrist. With the 3 ring zulu strap it fits me perfectly. Plus i've seen plenty of women wearing gshocks here in Israel, and they make smaller "baby-G" and women's models although they don't have the ABC sensor.

I'm a 5'8" 140lb stick figure and I get away with wearing this monstrosity just fine, to the point it even plays nicely with a suit. It's about having the confidence to wear it rather than have it wear you.

If you've seen people with those things around their necks that have earbuds coming off of them it's those.

I understand about small wrists. Mine is 5" and I have to have child sized medical alert bracelets even. My bones dislocate so don't do heavy watches or bracelets. Still, looking into options.
I've not been around anyone using that headset, but it does seem reasonably priced, and like it might just fit the bill. Thanks for posting about it! :)

This is my other watch. It's about 50 years old. One of my personal training clients from back in the day had bought it in Switzerland in the 60s. He gave it to me when I was training him (after about 5 years of training). I replaced the cheap brassy expando band with a cheap leathery band and had it cleaned and oiled. It is mechanically wound or by using the weight inside and general movement. If it's worn every day it keeps time. But it's not even water resistant so I don't wear it often. It is a real jewelled movement, you can actually see the stones. It is rose gold, but it's laid over the steel case. So the bezel and lugs are coated. It's not electroplate, it's actually a separate thin layer bonded or welded to the case. I like it, but I don't wear it often.[IMG][IMG]

My Hamilton keeps time the same way. I keep telling myself my next watch will be an Omega. The one I really like is about the cost of a decent used car though, so we'll see how that works out.

Did a little more reading on my watch. Apparently the 11 million serial numbers were manufactured between 1947-1950. So my watch is a bit older than I thought.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300m in a 44mm case. Early anniversary present, but my wife said to jump on it, so I did before she could change her mind. :p

  15. That's lovely. My Seamaster is my daily wear - it's picked up lots of wabi over the years. If anything I like it more now!

I have a watch. my mother in law bought it for me many many years ago. I don't wear it anymore, but I don't wear any jewelry. the battery in it is dead I know that. I need to have it replaced. I assume most any jewelry stores will do it??

Most jewelry stores can do it. Or even the jewelry department of a major department store in the mall. Some malls also have kiosks that sell watches, and they typically can as well.

You'd be surprised by how cheap most watch batteries are. I think the last time I had one put in a watch it was $6 or something like that.

They usually just charge you for the battery. The installation is included.
