Drawing the nude...

The male figure drawn will get scorn in open forums whereas the female drawn in the same pose will be accepted. I understand peoples personal preferences but even when it comes to what should be objective situations (i.e.: a gallery) objectivity is lost.

I think I understand where you are coming from here, though could be way off. The nude male is beautiful, powerful, and to me at least...vulnerable. I love male nudes as much as female, though have drawn only 1/3 as many men as women from life. Soon working with at least one male friend who will be posing nude over several months, and possibly another.

Kinsey, SEAF (Seattle Erotic Art Festival- they accept international submissions), and Sin City Gallery all display erotic male nudes. Happy to post links if you like. :)

Do you work primarily with the nude male figure? Are you having trouble with a gallery that will not display your work? What materials do you prefer to work in? Are you talking about more classical or more erotic as far as poses?

Thank you Wildermaid, well, I have done drawings of myself. One particular drawing that was just a simple sketchy pose ended up in an 'open context' and was met with severe opposition. I feel fairly certain if a woman had done the same with a drawing of herself it would have been appreciated. That's where my comment originates. At this point I'm not interested in posting publicly...

Nude forms are nude forms. The human body has many interesting bits about them. They don't have to be perfect one just has to learn how to see the beauty of it. As they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Fair enough to not feel safe, I understand that at least in concept. May I ask though what this open forum was? Was it in a brick and mortar (or whatever material) gallery, an online space, an online forum, something else?

@Sierra There will always be critics. Always. Sometimes this is helpful and constructive critique other times you want to tell them to fuck off and the words cut in ways that stay open and sting for years. Sounds like the latter may have happened to you and I'm not trying to poke wounds, just trying to understand context.

Sierra is my former drawing and painting instructor.
His work has appeared in several high-end galleries, in the US and internationally.

Though I have not yet seen him display one of his nude pieces in a gallery or show, he has shared them privately with a few select friends.

While his figurative drawings are incredibly accurate and stunning in their own right, His abstractions are my favorite. Each piece emotes an unexplained intensity.

That sounds like some exciting work indeed! I'm especially interested in the figurative but that is because I've never gotten over the simple fascination with the varieties of human bodies.

I'm curious to understand more about the situation when @Sierra was publicly scorned for his nude self portrait.

Thank you Wildermaid :) Im glad you appreciate this kind of work and I like your thoughts you posted about your artistic intentions as well. Just don't feel like going into the antics of small minded people lol.

Very much fair enough @Sierra please accept my apology for being nosey or pushy. You have such an interesting "voice" (if that makes sense) I just wanted to understand you better. I'm an awkward social being though so often do it wrong. lol. Delighted to see you here in the thread, and super curious about your abstract works as well! Really hope you're having a good day! :)

Photobucket.com is your friend. Make a free account, upload to your account from your desktop/laptop, auto copy the URL of the image, and share.
I recommend making a few folders you load in to, and use one specifically for sharing. It's nice to have another means of access to your own images.
