Should you give something to LEOS or any public servants?

IMHO we should not. I want to. I want to because I want to support them. But the system can become corrupt by the generosity when it turns into an expectation for doing their jobs. I disagree with what they did.

As a business owner, I see COMP at the bottom of the receipt. This also means they stole from the restaurant owner/franchise/corporate office. The servers benefited by the "hefty tip" that was left for them. So basically they stole from the company and was rewarded with a cash tip.

The article implies that Arline was something other than a server (mgr?) and that the four officers were regulars there. I don't have a problem with it as a one time thing.

Sure but the COMP is the issue. If they paid for it out of their own pockets, maybe I'd feel a little different because even as a manager it still has to be "explained" in some manner.

Shrinkage or losses from establishments get paid for by patrons in some fashion or another.

Most large companies have a benefit tab where they can donate to benefit auctions, fund raisers, little league that sort of thing.
I'd say this would fall into that category.
They probably put the cost into that section and wrote it off on their taxes at the end of the year.

I do feel that it shouldn't be a regular thing but every once in a while, not a problem especially in stress situations.
In New Jersey a few years ago A waitress bought the police their meals after a major kerfuffle but that came out of her pocket.

In uniform there were several places to go that gave you a discount. Chick Fila and Cafe Rio both gave 50% off. Denny's would give 20% off. But we never asked for a discount. My rationale was I paid what they charged me. As far as that office publishing that receipt, I would not have done that. Seems improper to me. I know it was a nice gesture, but it seems like it's encouraging that.

Sounds like the staff had good intentions. If I was a LEO though, I would thank them for the gesture but still try to pay the full amount and explain how some members of the public might think that actions like this could lead to favoritism. If they still refused to allow me to pay, I would leave enough cash on the table enough to cover the bill + tip.

A lot of what motivated where we would eat is where we though it was less likely that we would end up with spit in our food. A couple of the older guys liked denny's, but to me that was a place that I didn't trust very much. Some guys liked subway or Jimmy John's, because they could watch the food being prepared. It's a shame, but that's what we deal with. Notice that most officers don't have anything descriptive on their personal vehicles. Firefighters, on the other hand, will let you know exactly who they are. People treat all firefighters as heroes. So they have the license plates. The stickers on their windows. The t shirts. The baseball caps. The calendars. People give them free food, drinks, coffee, etc. Firefighters have much more self esteem and much more positive outlook on their jobs because of the public admiration.

It is no secret here, I don't like LEOs, lawyers, judges or politicians. If I never come in contact with another I would be grateful.
Let's say your doing 45 in a 35 zone. It's dark outside, early morning, sipping coffee and smoking a Pall Mall not paying attention to your speed. Not hurting anyone. Just driving to work. An LEO, driving the opposite direction decides they want to pull you over because their bored and want someone to harass. They do an illegal u- turn, accelerated to 80 mph, to catch up with you, and pass a car in the process endangering that other vehicle and maybe someones life. Then when you see this car in your rear view screaming up on you, it's only then when they flip on thoughs cherrys and berrys. You might have been thinking on how to get the hell off the road and out of the way! Who is MORE in the wrong? Fucking police.

Law Enforcement Officer. And it's interesting how citations go both ways in it's meaning.

I wonder when I'm going to get a discount, honestly.

Some places I do get a discount if I show my badge. But there's no uniform to scream "teacher here."

I had lunch with a friend at Chipotle. He said he was military and they gave him this discount.

Ummm... I still don't think it is right.

Do you think any uniformed person should get a discount? Nurses, military, teachers, firefighters? Senior discounts? What about that? And he was in uniform or did he just ask for a discount?

He just asked for a discount was wearing a tshirt and shorts, no uniform.

I'm okay with discounts, make it Police Appreciation day or Teachers Appreciation day and the like. All the time? Not really especially since there is IMO chance and opportunity for bad actor cops. Let's put it simply Congressman and Senators cannot accept ANY GIFTS so that they show no favoritism. I mean why not show appreciation for their efforts too?

I was in the Roots store buying some really expensive Olympics branded Roots tshirts. It was going to bust the bank, but I thought they would make decent gifts. The lady in front of me in the lineup was having the staff fetch clothing from all over... She ended up with a stack of clothes that was easily close to $1000. And the cashier said, 'don't worry, that's comp'. Turns out the lady was Kim Catrall. She was a big deal back then. A big deal gets you comp on things. I paid full price. I'm not a big deal.
