I wasn't born yet. But it did look like something I would have attended.

MTV messed up the anniversary ones so bad in 1994 and 1999 that they couldn't even get a 50th anniversary one put together. Whoever they had picking the music acts needed to be fired. I love Rage Against The Machine, but that wasn't the venue for them. It should have been a celebration of hippie culture and the conquest of the conservative hold on society.

The problem is that the hippies don't know how to build a society around it and deal with the day to day issues.

I worked for MTV post 1994 and know many people who worked on 1999.

They didn't produce nor create the show. Just like a sports event, they just broadcast it. MTV covered the event.

I know many people who went to the original one. One of them has some of the best footage that is not widely released.

    Woodstock Tapes

As far as musical acts are concerned in a world of Lollapalooza, Governer's Ball, Cochella, Bonnaroo, SXSW, you have competition to go up against with shrinking disposable dollars and time for people to attend such large scale events. While you want to believe the hype as to it being hippy, it wasn't. It was much more commercial than people romanticize. This is what was explained to me by the person who took that footage.

It takes about a year of planning for such scaled events and once the initial venue was pulled I doubted they were going to pull this off.
