Tree Dancing with Colours

I have a link on my website for people to purchase prints (a third party site - I get a percentage of their fee, they do all the work). A woman saw my work and loved the Tree Dancers, and contacted me to tell me she was a real fan of the series, and ordered a bunch of prints. In a follow-up to our email exchange I asked her how the prints she bought looked, and she told me that actually the large ones were disappointing. The other day I took a good look at the files and realized that they were irretrievably bad (the originals have long since been sold). So I pulled the files from the site. But I felt really bad about the woman who was all excited for her purchase and then let down by the prints.

So I decided that I would do something that (as the original artist) I feel is ok. I made 8x10 prints of a few of the files on a light card stock. And then I coloured them in with pencil crayons and touched them up with pencil & fine line pen. Now I need to email the woman who originally bought them and ask if it is ok for her to give me a snail mail address where I can send these re-created drawings as a recompense.

Here are a couple of original drawings, and their colourized do-over. I'd be interested to hear what people think of the concept of an artist reworking a print this way, and of the end product itself.

It seems to me the only potential problem could be in her expecting monochrome images as proper recompense. However if she was easy-going enough not to complain or demand a refund then she may appreciate these colored versions.

As for you being an artist, reworking prints and editions and all that, why trouble yourself with the concerns of a collector? It's your stuff, do what you want with it.

 

Manic - she isn't expecting anything. I had asked her to give me feedback and she told me the larger items looked a little blurry, but she thought it maybe had to do with the glossy surface they were printed on. This is entirely something I'm doing on my own, for my own satisfaction. That and it is interesting to see how the work looks with colour in it. I find it akin to several of my ink line drawings that have had colour put on them either as a final stage in the the process or as an add-on to an art-card.

 

Well then I'm sure she'll be delighted. I would be.

I wanted to see how some other Dancers look in colour. I think they look nice, actually. That last one posted above - The Arched Dancer - my Lady didn't know there was a bird in the drawing until she saw the coloured version It goes to show what a fresh look at something can give you.

Stunning as always. Have you considered trying to photoshop all the tree-ladies into one picture creating a sort of forest of awesome?

 

Thanks Canthook. Never thought of that photochopping a forest up thing. Have thought of drawing them though - a lot of things have been thought out and the process would go a bit quicker, even if I do make a lot of changes.

My Dancer coloured - the first shall be last, as they say. This one was the first large-scale Tree Dancer I drew. My Lady's 5 year anniversary present.

Insomnia has me browsing old threads of mine. I like these re-imagined pieces and thought to re-share. My sibs got the original recoloured drawings. The rest have been sold over the years. They also got turned into art cards and prints on photo paper which have sold at art shows from time to time. All in all they turned out rather nicely
