The Dems are definitely being too passive & too pacifistic. They need to rally voters for the turnout they got in 2020, & they need to show how dangerous the Repubs and Trump are. Simply letting them look idiotic isn't enough.

NJ OPRA: Legislature again seeks to reform transparenct law

This' also a news media issue, but I think OPRA covers much more, also the article doesn't make it about journalist vs government secrecy.

I understand what some of the proponents for reform are saying. There are companies that gather info gathered by various government agencies and sell it.

I did it. The branch company I worked for had the contract to handle requests for Extremely Vital Financial Documents that were absolutely required by law and were supposed to be public info.

One of the other branch companies specialized in tracking down much more obscure information, which frequently involved various FOI and similar requests. Basically they found info available for free, or a nominal fee, and resold it for a nice profit.

In some cases the government agencies, usually very large ones, were quite happy to let an outside company deal with info requests. OTOH many smaller agencies resented providing info that was going to be sold at a profit.

I suppose this could fall under Business Politics.

Robert Hur will testify as private citizen with help from Trumpworld figures

Portugal’s far right comes roaring back

This is what's happening, a part of the manipulations of the MAGA party
And surges throughout the world of far right groups and parties.

    Why???
Why are there these activies by far right people? Especially in 2024

    Are people more angry?
Are the ultra right more audacious?
Are opposing groups floundering and distracted allowing it
Is there larger coordination and sharing of methods?
    Is it money $$$

    All the above?
Is is it just same old crap, and the global 24/7 news are just catching it more?

IMHO, there seems to be a pattern.
    IDK why
    It's just surreal.

The trial that flies under the radar?

Team Trump Begs Him to Keep His Mouth Shut at NYC Criminal Trial

Of course they're advising NPD Trump to avoid acting like a spoiled ass in the courtroom.

Maybe he's one of those people who does the opposite of what they're told, so their not advising him STFU & behave.

Maybe Ivanka is sitting on his lap, calling him Big Daddy, & asking Big Daddy to be a good boy.

    https://nypost.com/2024/03/22/us-news/heartbreaking-diary-of-teenager-who-died-living-off-the-grid/

This hits me not because of any personal experience, but because I occasionally see YouTube recommend some "prepper" vids that I might like.

I would like to know what was going through the minds of the adults. They, together or at least one individually, had to know when it was time to give up OTGL & get some immediate help.

I have (had?) an uncle (now very old if still alive) who probably could survive doing bare basics wildness living, but he also grew up in the country, served in the army, & did long hikes & camping in the wildness. He's probably the only person I know on a personal level that I would trust to make it work.

In some ways this reminds me of the guy who attempted to rely on nature for survival on the Appalacian Trail using a survival guide book. The sad thing is he might have made it with more/better knowledge of how to preserve meat & other foods. The book about his journey, which I think includes much of his journal, was very popular (and of of course the title escapes me), & the path he took is popular with hikers.

What these crazy fucks don't understand is that living off the grid was never about "depending only on yourself".
The dipshit preppers brought their fuck everybody else attitudes and the religious nuts followed right along.
The fact is that if you live off the grid you need to depend on your neighbors even more than you do in a city.
There is a reason they had barn raising parties and volunteer fire departments in small rural areas.
You had your neighbors back even if they were 20 miles down the road.
If you were going into town you would see if they needed anything.
Community is what helps you survive when you do something stupid.
Split your foot in half with an ax?
Granma Baily will get it cleaned up because she was a nurse in the army, but she will also have her son the bush pilot get you to a hospital so you don't die of sepsis, cause she isn't a fan of stupid.
Community is what keeps you alive when you don't have the benefits of civilization.

Trump Might Be Too Broke for a $175 Million Bond, Too

That he cannot afford this without a bond company is BS.
He just made it back up to the Fortune 500 with someone's purchase/partnership of Truth Social
And he bragged just last week that he has 500 million in liquid funds.

    Games on top of games.
    Lies on top of lies.

We'll find out...if he goes through a surety company and has to reveal doing so. I know there is one watchdog (possibly two?) monitoring his businesses & finances, but something tells me a private loan or gift could be made anonymously.

    The courts are largely
letting him have what he wants,
so they could help him find a way to
keep the true financial backing a secret.

California GOP leaders call for accountability after state can’t account for $24B spent on homeless crisis

Living in a hurricane state, & region in general, I've heard hundreds of stories about government waste & fraud when it it comes to emergency aid. The people needing help now don't want red tape and many times no longer have the documents that would help make sure the aid goes to the right people. The people seeing the crisis from a distance, & well after the fact, want procedures to help reduce waste & fraud.

I don't know if FAUX News and some Republican leaders in California are making a mountain out of a molehill, or if how the money was spent is a very serious issue. I'm guessing both.

He was back, now he's gone again.

George Santos ends independent bid for Congress after raising no money

    *****
Note: The NY Post makes no attempt at excellence in journalism. Also the number of ads in the story is annoying to say the least.
    *****

George "Everyone Exaggerates" Santos claims No Money Raised was intentional; clearly his ability to self-delude hasn't diminished.

Hopefully the next time he makes the news it will be him going to prison after being convicted on numerous counts of fraud and theft.

I think they're seeing all the things that have happened in Georgia, and they want to win.
With Chump in the mix, there's tons of resistive political pressure, the potential of presidential immunity, the mass of MAGA threats and protest and so on...

Without him, all of the above are willing to let his aides and allies be thrown under the bus.
And prosecutors want a win...without becoming targets themselves. (like the AG in Georgia has become)

It truly is a cult of personality. Anything for one person.
any others are expendable... (kind of like Nixon)

What does that say about people???

    What is happening???

Something stupid...all over the nation, students are up in arms in protest about Gaza.
However, they're NOT up in arms about Chump.

So, they're protesting something across the world, about a back & forth battle that's happened for decades, for a group that's done terrorism repeatedly, including now, not wanting Israel to exist.
BUT not protesting something recent, in this nation, that will potentially allow a tyrant in, destroy a nation, for a guy that's worse than anything their moms told them not to be when they grow up. (and almost 100 of charges)

    Uhhh...y'think their priorities are off?
The bleeding heart libs on campuses are bleeding for Hamas-led but not bleeding enough to go after the ultra-conservative, ultra-capitalist, that wants to take over it all...and get rid of their student funding too. (yes, he's said it)

    Talk about out of focus.
Talk about the strange nation we now find in our time.

THIS is what they decide to hang their hats on???
Frankly, it's probably just a stupid peer-pressured trend, just like all the others.

Hell, at least the 60's beatniks picked a protest that actually was affecting the US and killing vets.

Go ahead kids, scream your bloody heads off...because I'm "sure" that both Israel and Hamas will listen to you.
Uhh, why won't they care...because you're NOT fuckin' living there!!!

Pick a protest for your home.
Pick one against the corruption here.
Pick one that will actually affect YOU and your friends and family.
but even more so, pick one that will save your lilly white soft handed $$$ that you get for college.

Pretty much my thoughts everytime I see the protests on the news.

The people in Gaza are facing an age old quandary.

They feel wronged by (true in many ways) and helpless against the much more powerful, and connected, Israel.

They support, even if silently, Hamas because they want to feel like something is being done. That support includes turning a blind eye to acts of terrorism.

Hamas commits an atrocious act against Israel, targeting civilians. What kind of reaction did the the people of Gaza expect?

I'm not saying Israel's actions in Gaza aren't extreme, but they have a history of making enemies pay big time, be it fair or foul.

Supporting Hamas is understandable. Knowing there could/will be extreme penalties, that will affect innocent and neutral citizens, should be expected.

If the students protesting are Israeli, and Palestinian, I'm fine with the protests (except the vandalism and violence). If they are several layers removed from the conflict, I'm not fine with it. We have too much going on here for for most students to worry about what's going on in Gaza.

    A strange thought???:
This reminds me of our news media ignoring NPD Trump and MAGA for well over a week while they covered the death QE, then followed her dead body around the UK.
