    Who cares, really?
Anyone else using ChatGPT? Or have an experience with it?

I've heard a lot about it, and only recently a friend was trying to introduce me to it. I've been reluctant to delve into it, though.

My buddy uses it for work but has begun to use it in our D&D campaign for organizing his character. Although I've examined it and admittedly it looks enticing, here's why I'm resisting:

    - A few weeks ago, I sat down at my computer and went to the GPT main screen. My friend told me to start entering information, and it will go from there. I sat for about 30 minutes wondering where to start, realized time was slipping away, and literally turned my back on my computer and wrote out notes on a subject.

Once I'd gotten a page and a half of notes & ideas, I didn't want to re-enter all that again. I could work with everything I just jotted down on paper!

I don't need one more excuse to sit down in front of my computer; I have plenty and need more reasons to step away.

    - Also, I haven't fact-checked this yet, but I understand it's a bit wasteful of energy to use ChatGPT, especially for frivolous topics.

    - Finally, it seems like it's addictive. Unless there's a truly exceptional reason to use it, I'm probably not going to bother at this point.

ChatGPT is great for some things. I use it all the time at work. It's nice to be able to just paste an email body in and say "hey ChatGPT, can you make this sound a bit more professional?"

I've also used it for rubber ducking. I find that it usually isn't smart enough to give me an answer to a problem unless the problem is relatively simple, in which case I probably can solve it on my own; but it will have a dialogue with me where I can probe out some of the corners of an issue.

I don't usually use it for summarizing material or anything like that, because I'm paranoid that it will end up hallucinating or giving me misinformation. I've mentioned this before but I don't actually think hallucinations are a solvable problem which means it will never be fully reliable for that kind of thing.

It's a tool and if you understand what it's best used for it can be helpful, like any tool.
