We all know about Star Trek, Star Wars, and Babylon 5...
but what are your favorite obscure, old/antique, indy, or just plain off-the-wall science fiction shows and book series?

Have you come across anything good recently?

I recently found a show on YouTube. We recorded it off TV when I was a kid. It's called Earth Star Voyager. Turns out it has a bit of a cult following. The score is really very well done. It's odd how when I started watching it, the music was even more familiar to me than the story. It makes me wonder if some of the themes show up elsewhere. The composer has an impressive track record, Lalo Schifrin. Lalo Schifrin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Other favorites from my childhood:
Twilight Zone - creepy! It kept me up at night thinking.
Lost in Space - I was obsessed with this show when I was about 4
The Navigator - The first time I realized the issues with spaceflight and time
The Last Starfighter - oh man, I had a HUGE crush on Alex (Lance Guest)
Earth 2 - who doesn't love Tim Curry as a bad guy?
Somewhere in Time - romantic! As a preteen I was so in love with this one.
The Andromeda Strain - made me a major germ freak for about a month when I was 12.

I'm pretty excited about the prospect of a new revamp of Lost in Space. ‘Lost In Space’ Remake Picked Up To Series By Netflix | Deadline

Science-fiction is perhaps my favorite genre of television, and so I've explored a number of its lesser known titles. I liked Earth 2, but I haven't watched all of it. The Twilight Zone is a classic favorite, and I've also enjoyed the similar shows Black Mirror, Inside No. 9 (though it doesn't have any SF episodes, yet?), Métal Hurlant Chronicles, and The Outer Limits. If Netflix is set to produce a Lost in Space remake, it will probably fare better than 2004's The Robinsons: Lost in Space, whose unaired pilot you can now find on YouTube.

My favorite cult SF series that I now consider old are:

    All the Star Treks (1966-2005)
The Prisoner (1967-68, seminal in several genres)
Star Cops (1987, nice hard SF with a cheesy name)
Sliders (1995-00, the first 3 seasons are the most popular)
Space Island One (or Raumstation Unity, the far better German name, 1998)
    Cowboy Bebop (1998-99)
    MythQuest (2001, sort of SF)
    Odyssey 5 (2002-04)
    Planetes (2003-04)
    Battlestar Galactica (2003-09)
    ReGenesis (2005-08, super-hard SF)

The link appears to still work. I did a little navigating, didn't try to watch anything.

I wonder if @MeltedMetalGlob has seen the site?

I was JUST on that site over the weekend; a friend had bought a vintage Dungeons & Dragons book and it had a section that had been censored in later editions- I thought it was too valuable to loan out, so I looked on that site to see if someone had uploaded it for perusal. (They had.) :)

Just to stay on topic, an old sci-fi book series I've loved since my childhood is Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom novels.

If this sounds familiar, Disney made a movie loosely based on the source material in 2012 titled John Carter. The movie wasn't bad, but poor marketing ensured there would be no sequels. Not to mention that George Lucas stole numerous names from Burrough's world for Star Wars.

On Barsoom, they have banths, which are gargantuan six-legged tigers. George altered the name to bantha and made it giant buffalo. Barsoom also has a sith, which is nothing more than a giant wasp.

For those who didn't see the film, the book features a soldier from the late 1860's who ends up transported to Mars. He learns to adapt to the new environment, being able to jump fantastic heights, move more quickly than typical Martians and also have incredible strength. (I believe John Carter was the inspiration for Superman.)

Each book has him travel to a new part of the world, meet new inhabitants and eventually join forces to defeat whatever villain plagues the land. There's a bit of "white savior" tainting the material, but on the other hand Carter befriends various races, each with different-colored skin and eventually has an army of diverse races all banding together to combat evil.

Every few years I dig out the ten books and re-read them. I can't get enough of this world.
