I know people who make money on the side being paid DMs.
I never thought about how much work and creativity goes into the process but it makes sense to pay someone who creates a weekly entertainment that can last hours.
And if you are paying them you are much more likely to show up.

I get this sentiment. I've played a lot of D&D on Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds over the past several years, but this isn't the same as my semi-regular in-person sessions that I ran before 2020.

Since 2017, I've gotten heavily into board games, but I'm lucky in that I have up to 5 other players living within 100 feet of me (in addition to two other board game collections).

I think the big draw is the unplugging. This is why board gaming specifically (and tabletop gaming in general) has seen such a huge boom.

Sorry, folks. This list is way, way too "woke" for me. A number of these events have taken place in my game (and my co-GMs) over the years and will probably continue to do so in the future. If they were prohibited (even in part), our campaigns would never get off the ground. All the players know this and accept it as an (unpleasant) part of life. Right and justice (sometimes brutal) always triumph in the end. People who can't tolerate it shouldn't be in our games in the first place. They should be headed for Disneyland.

    It's about consent and description.
If you have someone in your group who was brutally sexually assaulted the list is a way to find out what they are comfortable with.
You don't have to change the campaign but you can change how you describe things.
You are also getting the consent of the person to run that kind of campaign.
Nothing about the trauma they went through suggests them going to Disneyland.
They don't want to be wrapped in pillows, just to be given some room to fight.

No, but the rest is either 3rd party sourcebooks, periodicals or other rulebooks for different games. Be a bit messy to drag them all out and try to take a picture. (The original concept was to just post the books from whatever edition you started with; I stole this idea from Threads!) :D

Thread hijack alert (but sort of related)!

Somebody made a post about not liking the last two books in Tolkien's epic trilogy, which I agreed with. A few years back I ran across a guide to help people keep track of the 1,737* characters he introduces, & I was tempted to buy it (Goodwill store, maybe $4.00 tops) & try reading the trilogy again. But I wasn't that tempted.

    * Hyperbole.

I'm not sure about that. That sounds accurate, especially if you factor in the appendices, which in all likelihood add an additional 378 characters.

Speaking of the appendices, I recall a conversation with a friend who was glowing over the news that the Hobbit would be made into a trilogy, using material from said appendices.

I disagreed with this approach, as to stuff extra story into what should have been a single, two-hour movie would be excessive.

If it were up to me, I would have made The Hobbit one movie and then used the material from the appendices into several new movies.

Had what they refer to as a "Session Zero" last night, with one new person and an old friend who I haven't gamed with in about 25 years! We'll be adding two more people (schedule conflicts yesterday)
for a regular game, twice a month, with possibly adding one more player if things work out.

Kiddos have been enjoying D&D at the library. One of the children's librarians is a DM. Very G-rated.

Played a RPG like Friday The 13th and Cabin In The Woods.
Actually had a character survive the slaughter.

Wanted to mention that my group that I started a few months ago is still going strong, and made it to 2nd level. Five new players, one of them an old friend from the 90's.

Although I stated at the beginning that we'd be using 1e/2e rules primarily, I've been able to integrate some 5e rules into the campaign, and adding more as I come to understand the mechanics of said rules.

This group also has a fascinating dynamic; they're very cautious and meticulous planners- the groups I used to game with seldom bothered with finesse and usually crashed into things, literally.

There's also an element of whimsy that I really enjoy- the one woman at our table is an experienced gamer and she and her husband (who also games with us) are a delight. It's actually altered my style a degree to where aspects that were originally meant as minor distractions instead become potential plot points. Just as an example, a cackling old crone sitting in a corner of a dungeon had one purpose- to reveal the name of the villain. Now, I allow the opportunity for the players to rescue the woman and cure her insanity because they genuinely care about random NPCs.

I daresay it's added a bit of "heart" to my campaign, and it's a wonderful feeling. (Don't get me wrong, I'd love to make time for my original players if they wanted, but this is discovering a taste for foreign food that I've never had before.)

Why do I feel like the only person on Earth who never got into group gaming? Actually any kind of gaming, truth be told.

I knew very few people who were into gaming, even fewer who were seriously into gaming,
& no one who was into group on-line gaming.
