The first that I recall that was more a defiant posture...

I remember when my aunt divorced her husband, she played this song over and over. She even recorded it onto cassette so that she could rewind it and write down the lyrics.

    Another upbeat breakup tune:

I don't know what it is, but I especially enjoy this song. Sometimes I tune out (pun intended) the fact that it's sad and just go along with the melody.

One from Paul Simon from his absolutely stellar album Graceland, where he joined up with African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo to create a masterpiece:

Two sections of lyrics make this a breakup song; one part states- "She comes back to tell me she's gone." This hits home for me, having been in situations where things look grim as far as my relationships go. Then, I get a phone call/visit from her and it's not to say hello, but to say goodbye.

The second part goes, "Losing love is like a window in your heart. Everybody sees you're blown apart."

(If you haven't heard this album, I strongly recommend rectifying that ASAP!)

I've heard it many times; I much prefer his follow-up album The Rhythm of the Saints.

For some interesting reading research claims by members of Los Lobos that Paul Simon used -- stole -- their creativity on Graceland. Many musicians, esp session musicians, feel their contributions aren't properly recognized, but the Los Lobos members make a strong case for their claim.
