What books are you reading right now?

"Jumper" by Steven Gould.

 

I just finished reading "Jumper" by Steven Gould. Now, I'm reading "Old Man's War" by John Scalzi.

 

I just finished Tana French The Keeper.
Outstanding, like most of her work.
She does a wonderful job making you feel like you are in an old Irish farming town.

 

I'm reading a trilogy published decades ago that I finally found time for- The Dragonriders of Pern books by Anne McCaffrey. A friend had what is called The Harper Hall trilogy, and gave them to me. I'm on book 2, and it's decent, but doesn't quite blow me away. Although my research shows that the books I have are very character-driven, and come off as material for the young adult crowd. There's about twenty other books, so I may check them out after I finish these three.

They're science fiction, but play out like fantasy- the premise is that a long-lost human colony is stranded on a planet, where deadly radiation falls to the ground every season. The humans bioengineer fire-breathing dragons to combat the radiation (called Thread) by burning it out of the sky.

I became aware of these books through a videogame for the Commodore 64 computer back in the mid 1980's based off the books. The game was action-packed, with both political intrigue and Thread-fighting sequences. The goal is to acquire political power through alliances formed by negotiations and wheeling-dealing behind the scenes, and burning Thread to protect the people and curry favor simultaneously. A fantastic game, although the books I'm reading have none of this.

From the material I've found, this trilogy runs concurrently along another series in the same universe, so I'll see if I can find those books for comparison. I'm not regretting what I've read so far, but I wouldn't re-read this again. I'd rather go back to Dune or Burrough's Barsoom series for the umpteenth time.

 

Right now, I'm rereading "The Oregon Files: Ghost Soldier". "The Oregon Files" is a seriously engrossing adventure series and I love all of them!
