1. We've had very few donations over the year. I'm going to be short soon as some personal things are keeping me from putting up the money. If you have something small to contribute it's greatly appreciated. Please put your screen name as well so that I can give you credit. Click here: Donations

Somewhere here there's a thread in which I answered a similar question in great detail.

If hindsight were foresight...computers. I would've had my foot in the door before home PCs, before 386-16, the internet, etc.

    Journalism, boxing and politics.

In a fantasy world...boxing, as in actually boxing.

I wanted to be either a garbageman or a forest ranger. I was told I was too smart for that. Well, I showed them didn't I? :p

Edit: I'm neither a garbageman or a forest ranger. I'm a computer dude. Fell into it really. Never finished 1st semester of college.

I should have been a dishwasher. I know that sounds odd, but I've been checking the job ads and I'm floored at how much they're paying these days.

I found two separate postings that paid very well. One was a sushi restaurant that was offering $80K a year. Sushi isn't cheap, so I guess they can afford to pay their staff a living wage. The other one was only part-time, but the hours involved no weekends and no evenings, either. That one paid $30.15 an hour, about $50K a year. I could live with that.

Both jobs required previous experience, so I was not eligible to apply.

(Just so I don't end this post on a downer of a note, here's some obligatory humor)

Sigh... I would have made a great cleaner. When people asked what I did for a living, I could have produced this picture: ("Let me show you my pride & joy!")

    Off topic, sort of.

We've all seen movies & TV shows that make fun of prison guards for being low IQ in general.

I recall ads that ran on the radio where the Texas Dept of Corrections were hiring prison guards. The ads started with something like "You can earn up to $24K a year (this was mid 1990s)." The ad listed decent benefits...then...stated the $24K was after 5 years with ALL raises & bonuses. The sctual starting annual salary was...$18,500.00. This caught my attention because it was so misleading, & a guy I worked with was considering applying.

Oof, $18500 then is like $40k now.. Denver's minimum wage is $18.29 so barely that.

As a kid I always wanted to go into aviation, but had no idea how to do it. And had no idea Metro State College here in Denver has long had a well regarded aviation program that major airlines have long hired entry level pilots from.

While I think the guidance counselors we had in public schools pretty much sucked, I do wonder if one at your school might've been able to point you in the right direction.

I met a young guy who went into aviation maintenance because it paid a very good hourly rate. The maintenance was on the aircraft body; engine repair was handled by mechtech specialists who made serious money (for wage earners).
