People tend to mix and match the definition of lag in online games. Lag is when your Internet connection makes the actions you take have a delay. The choppiness you're talking about comes from having a computer without enough graphical or processing power to render the game good enough. Lag = slow Internet connection or disconnects; choppiness = computer isn't good enough to play the game.
I agree with the character customization though. There is definitely not enough difference in the way each character looks.
