I don't know if this counts as japanese punk rock (I listen to mostly punk and I like these guys), but the Pillows are awesome. It isn't really hardcore at all though (so by some people's standards it probably wouldn't be punk). They do the music for the show FLCL (yes it's anime but don't let that deter you).
