It's generally not done in a hospital or under sterile conditions like a make circumcision, so pictures I've seen (through medical journals) are pretty grim. It's done in various cultures, even though it might be illegal in those cultures (I beleive it's illegal in the US) to prevent the woman from having sexual desires because the clitoris and surrounding areas are cut out and sewn up rather crudely.
to answer the original question... Doesn't matter as long as hygiene is a factor...
