I think the whole problem stems from chinese cultural differences. Even nowadays chinese women are treated as second class citizens. They have to walk a few feet behind their man, and tend to his every need... I know this is a generalisation, but it is true for 70-80% of the chinese female population and they're taught to be like this from a young age.
Modern communications such as the internet will help to make them more independent.
