I usually buy based on reader and professional reviews. I'm the exact opposite as you in that if a game isn't outstanding I can easily get bored with it, even if its a decent game. Take Final Fantasy for example, everyone loves those games, but to me they're just the same old rpg and can't play the game for more than a half hour.
