Good luck man. vanblah and majik are right, quality tools are worth the money. Conversely, you could go with pencils and sketchbooks.
My old illustration instructor swears by
these guys for art supplies. He doesn't get a kickback afaik, and I trust his judgement immensely, so I don't find a reason to doubt his suggestion.
