Unless you spend a lot of dough on speakers you're going to be hard pressed to find a set that work well without a subwoofer anymore. Everyone wants the tiny little cube speakers these days and personally I think that's sad. I'll put my "old-fashioned" wood tower speakers up against just about anything out there. Just like with cars, in speakers there's no replacement for displacement. That air chamber makes the sound so much better.
