I'd be extremely reluctant to meet people in real life. I used to be on another forum on a regular, daily basis. Many, many times I found myself in towns where I knew other members lived. I made a point of never mentioning I was in the area. More then once I found myself still in their state but posted or PM'ed only after leaving their city. Closest I ever came to a real life meeting was a fellow moderator who live in Minnesota, he and I just couldn't get the time to work.
But maybe if you went you'd work through some of the social awkwardness you're dealing with?
