The first Olympics that I watched was 1972, and I remember sitting in my brother's room with him and my mother watching Jim McKay for hours. At the time I did not understand the full impact of what had happened but I was old enough to experience the intense emotion. I also became enamored with the sport of gymnastics while watching Olga Korbut. To this day I have the fondest and deepest memories of those two amazing individuals which came during such a trying time. Even now while watching sporting events on television I always compare the announcers to Jim McKay. He was the best.
