When I was little, my grandma used to make a mixture of whiskey (bourbon), lemon juice and honey for me. (Nowadays CPS and HHS would have her hauled off in handcuffs) There is still no better cough remedy, that I have ever found. I just take one of those 10oz jelly jars (the kind with the cartoon characters on 'em), mix up about a third of the glass with whiskey, add some honey (I dunno how much really. I just eyeball it. Maybe 3 tablespoons?), and add a long squirt of lemon juice. Burns like motherfucker going down, especially after you've coughed your throat raw, but you immediately start to "feel" it working. Repeat 3 times in 15-20 minute intervals and it'll knock the cough right out of you and you'll sleep like a little baby. Besides...even if it doesn't work...after 3 glasses of that mixture...you won't really care anymore.
