So everyone should be okay with Disney's "ripoff" of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid"? 
Would iconic require the character to be more original? Or is it merely a popularity thing?

Actually, if you go to each respective source, Aladdin is as old as 1,100 or 1,200, whereas Ariel is only 172.
Belle is 269.
