Just north of Chicago, in Evanston, is Flattop Grill (on Church), a choose your own stir fry place. Aside from lots of fresh ingredients to choose from (you pick the amount too, from a long buffet) they have a lot of amazing sauces, various ways to have it served (normal stirfry, soup, egg rolls, etc) , and delicious desserts (cheesecake!)
If you like Indian, Devon Avenue has a lot of good restaurants.
