Because to a lot of heteros (me included), being called "gay" is still very much an insult.
Wrote this in response to the original question without reading all the posts. Now I'll read all the posts and see if I've gotten it wrong, again.
After reading all the posts:
Sometimes it's necessary and fun to insult others. If you spend your whole life worrying about who you're going to offend, you're letting other people run your life.
Bad idea.
