If you are truly paranoid about it, switch to a different Media Player. Like Musicmatch from http://www.musicmatch.com or even Winamp from http://classic.winamp.com

Windows Media Player 'does' send stuff back to someone, but you can probably turn it off somehow. Otherwise, just stop using it
