At the time I thought a lot of it was that Europe got SCARED. 9-11 comes along and you see the US waving millions of flags, and speaking of revenge, and suddenly you see just how big we really are and how dangerous we can be.
As for me personally, nothing said here has really changed what I thought on a subject, but its still fun to argue about it to some degree.
