Personally I can't see how anyone can say that any of the past few FF games have sucked, all of them have been milestones and should be considered as standalone games with their own merits and faults. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who hates Turn Based combat with a passion and has never finished an FF game he's started.
The FF movie was not in essence an FF movie but it was quite impressive technologically. I found it to be too depressing and unmagical for me to go back to and enjoy, however I did buy the DVD.
