I once had to drive through a major winter storm on an interstate coming back from visiting my girlfriend. What normally is a 6.5 hour trip turned into 10 or so.
Really, the number one tip, the most important is simply to take it easy and drive SLOW. I didn't have any special snow tires or anything like that. Just a lot of common sense and a heck of a lot of patience.
