A buddy of mine is very hard of hearing, after 40-odd years in the construction industry. 40 years of swinging a hammer with no hearing protection would do it it anybody.
He uses a headset. The Jabra brand sets, that have a rubber doodad that sticks right in the ear seem to work best for him. He takes out his hearing aid and sticks that thing right in there, and hears every word.
