ESCAPED GORILLA GRABS A TODDLER Sep 30 2003

Two hurt as 22 stone Little Joe goes on a rampage

By Anthonyharwood

A GORILLA stamped on a toddler after escaping from his zoo pen for the second time in two months.

Little Joe, who weighs 22 stone, snatched two-year-old Nia Scott from teenage zoo worker Courtney Robertson's arms.

Courtney, 18, who was off duty, had taken Nia, a friend's daughter, to the zoo as a treat.

But she was stunned to be confronted by the escaped gorilla, which bit her before grabbing Nia.

The gorilla grabbed the child, threw her to the ground and jumped on her before going on the rampage around the streets of Boston, Massachusetts, for two hours.

He was finally found sitting at a bus stop after scavenging for food and drink in the streets around the city's Franklin Park Zoo. Police shot him with tranquiliser darts and captured him.

Nia's mother, Terry Scott, said: ``The gorilla snatched my baby. This gorilla jumped on my two-year-old. My baby's going to have to be all stitched up.''

Nia's injuries were said to be minor by doctors. But Courtney said: ``It just makes me feel really, really upset that they allowed this to happen again. This little girl could have died.''

Zoo officials were last nightinvestigating how the gorilla had scaled a 12 ft moat and got past an electric fence for the second time.

After attacking Courtney and Nia, Little Joe turned on ticket seller Nilsa Silver, who was sitting in a sales booth.

Nilsa said only a thin pane of glass separated her from Little Joe who pressed his face against the window, just inches away from her.

Workers inside cowered in terror as the animal started banging on the booth trying to get at them.

Nilsa, 22, said: ``I could smell him. He was really big and scary. We were trying hard not to scream.

``His hands were up on the booth and he was trying to figure a way of getting in. We were terrified.''

Courtney was bitten on the back and scratched on the leg.

In August, Little Joe, who is 5 ft tall, escaped for the first time from his section of the Tropical Forest exhibit.

Zoo officials installed electrified wires to keep him from escaping again.

Officials did not know exactly how he got out on Sunday.

A zoo spokesman said: ``We've had a very difficult evening, and we feel very badly about the adult and child injured.

``We don't know the extent of their injuries, but we think they'll be OK.''

Insanity. I wouldn't want to be the one who signed off on the electric fence. Hope he has his resume' updated.

Now for a movie, about a giant gorilla(s) rampage.

This reminds me of an old Nintendo game called Rampage. You ran around as a large monkey, smashing buildings and stuff.

G5_Todd 10-14-2003 07:34 AM

that game was awsome

Can we be sure it wasn't some guy in a gorilla suit? I love apes. I remember seeing that Kia minivan commercial where the monkeys grab the kids from behind the bars of the cage and it says something like "protect them while you can with the safety standards of the kia shitivan." I remember thinking, "who is their demographic." Now we know. People who have lost a child to apes. In all seriousness its very sad about the child, but I hope this won't start a big anti-ape movement. Apes are the greatest.

i knew a kid who got stomped by an elephant after climbing into the pen. The kid was autistic and the parents should have kept a closer eye on him. He was one of my mom's students, and actually one of her better behaved ones. I visited him once in the hospital. He was doing alright save for a few broken bones and ribs. we played sega genesis for the duration of the visit :)

wow I'd forgotten all about that. funny how a gorilla on a rampage will bring back old memories.

Was this the filming for Tim Burtons Planet of the Apes 2???
