Happy American Beer Month!

July is American Beer Month.

Anybody participating? Have you tried any brews that you've not had before?

I drink quite a few Belgian beers and found a great brewer of belgian style beers in Cooperstown called Ommegang.

Any other discoveries?

SinisterMotives 07-09-2004 11:15 AM

My absolute favorite is a Norwegian beer called Aas Classic. Kind of expensive, but definitely worth it.

My favorite American beer is Shiner Bock. It's available all over Texas and in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and North Carolina, but I never found any up north.

I tried some hawaiian beer. Man!!! i got to tell you hawaiians know shit about beers, i rather drink cat piss than drinking that stuff again. My favorite american beer is Coors Original and internationally, Gallo from Guatemala and Wersteiner, God! are thos two delicious!

Maybe I could celebrate this American Beer month by buying my first american beer - unfortunately they only sell Budweiser and Miller Genuine Draft here, and I have heard they ain't that good.

My personal favourite is Czech Velkopopovicky Kozel.

Your first American beer should definitely be a Shiner. I'd try their Heffeweisen for the delightful buzz it gives you. Most other American beers give you about the same head change.

I'll keep that in mind if I happen to see it in sale somewhere.

As of July 1, it will be legal to make, sell and purchase beer over 6 percent alcohol by volume in Georgia. I haven't had a chance to try some of the new beer being introduced into GA yet. A lot of bars will be importing beer from Belgium, France, Germany, and other European countries.

Horray for beer month! :D

meembo 07-09-2004 03:05 PM

Support your local brewery! I have a brother who makes beer (now at Harpoon) and I love trying all of his new creations (beer of the month, etc.)

Go buy a six-pack of something made in your area

SinisterMotives 07-09-2004 03:44 PM

Never mind my area, I'm moving to Georgia! http://bluehole.clarkworx.com/chrome...icon_happy.gif

bernadette 07-09-2004 08:59 PM

loyal heineken fan here.

my hubby calls it weasal piss. he has no good taste. ;)

Jeff 07-09-2004 09:23 PM

I love Heineken.

I do enjoy Bud Light though, no matter what anybody says.

Blackthorn 07-10-2004 04:32 AM

Trying one that I haven't had before is difficult unless you count the thousands of micro brews out there. I try a different one just about every week. There's a great market just north of the 'nati that's called Jungle Jim's .

Jungle keeps hundreds of lablels in stock. In fact there are 800 international brews from 30 countries and 400 domestics.

This place is greaaaaaat...

Might be a drinking game?

This reminds me of an old joke...

What do American beer and having sex in a canoe have in common?

They're both fucking close to water.

Kalnaur 07-10-2004 10:50 PM

I don't drink. I guess that means someone will have to drink my portion of american beer. :D Any volunteers?

Both excellent beers. I'm trying to get a group together to do a tour of the Anchor brewery in SF.

Here's another one that I like:

Can't say I actually like american beer, but I like the idea of a beer month.

Willy 07-11-2004 01:53 PM

Saying you don't like American beer is just ignorant, there are hundreds of beers made in the US, that pretty much cover every style and quality level you can think of. If you don't like Bud, Miller, and Coors and their other brands that's undestandable, but that's not the only 'American Beer'.

Ace_O_Spades 07-11-2004 03:42 PM

I've tried a wide variety of american beer... Here are some reasons I don't like drinking american beer:

a) Drinking weak beer
b) Not supporting local breweries

So ergo, I don't like, or drink, american beer, it has surprisingly little to do with the taste.

But regardless, happy beer month my neighbours to the south... And in the wise words of Norm McDonald, "No matter how bad life gets, there is ALWAYS beer"

scrooloose 07-12-2004 06:25 AM

This is funny to be that it is beer month in the USA and I drink Canadian beer.

roachboy 07-12-2004 07:57 AM

beer month. i like it...i like being given an official reason to drink beer. i like feeling like i am celebrating something Bigger as i do it.

like many folk, i do not drink much american beer---except for yuengling lager, which is ok if you are not feeling terribly affluent. and if it is cold. some microbrews are good--i like omegang--some yards--and that some good ones are only available regionally--like ipswich ale.

my favorites are belgian. i really love aachel. but there are lots.

were it not late morning on a monday, i would hoist a watery american brine to delayedreaction for the joke.
i know the guy who claims to have invented the pbr-and-a-shot-of-jack special.
he is in philadelphia.
someday, this claim will get etched in stone, and put on the history walk at penns landing, along with any number of other such claims to fame for the city.
like that philadelphia invented mustard.

No need to get your knickers in a knot.;)

While it may be true that there are "hundreds" of beers in the states, the ones I've tried didn't appeal to me, so I'll stand by my original statment until something good comes my way.

OUch, you hurt my heart.

Pabst is from here, Milwaukee. You're thinking of Old Style. The Pabst towers are soon to be desecrated by being turned into a shopping center/movie theater complex. Sad.

My favorite beer comes from the Milwaukee Alehouse, it's called Louie's Demise. Sheck it out.

I can get behind you in regards to drinking local beer. Everyone should(unless the beer in your region is crap). But weak beer? Dude, most micros in the US aren't making weak beer. Ommegang, who I mentioned at the top doesn't make a beer with a lower ABV than 5%, not very strong, but most of ther beers are between 7 and 9. Those aren't weak beers.

Regarding people who say they just haven't found good american beer, go out and look. I promise, if you're in the US, you'll find some. You'll probably find some made in your region. The whole point of having a month for American beers to raise people's awareness. If you don't try, you'll never find anything worth a damn.

Some suggested breweries:
http://www.ommegang.com/
http://www.stonebrew.com/
http://www.rogue.com/
http://www.bellsbeer.com/
http://www.dogfish.com/

Go out and try some, you might find one you like.

sailor 07-14-2004 05:32 AM

Mmm beer. There is this great brewery in Chapel Hill that has the most excellent amber ale. God, I could drink that stuff all day.

The rest of my American beer drinking is pretty tame compared to some of yall--I avoid water beer like the plague (Bud, Coors, etc), but I like me some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and lately Ive had a thing for the Sam Adams Summer Ale. Sam Adams isnt exactly a small craft brewery, but that Summer Ale is some damn good stuff.

rmarshall 07-14-2004 12:34 PM

I'm a Canadian and don't usually drink American beers. There are some good ones: Anchor Steam Beer and Sam Adams come to mind.

However, any excuse to have a beer is good enough for me. so I tried a black and tan. That's a half Smithwicks, half Guinness. Done right, it is a visual treat. The trick is to pour the Guinness very slowly over a spoon so that it doesn't mix with the Smithwicks.

Cheers!
